The Hardest Part

Angel paced around the small enclosure. He hated being there, hated not being able to see what was happening outside, happening with his boy.

It had been a long day, long and bloody, and Angel felt dead at the wheel. He had fought in the middle of the fray, trying to keep the threat away from Xander and the core of demons assigned to protect him. He'd fought long and hard, using both fangs and sword to take down the enemy. He'd fought until he could no longer ignore the itch beneath his skin.

A single sun had risen, soft tendrils of morning light stretching out across the battlefield, raising cries from the enemy as they began to feel the effects of the blinding light.

A soft explosion sounding in the distance brought a soft smile to the vampire's lips. Xander's plan was working as well as could have been expected. It looked like the days they had spent digging up the rocky earth and laying explosives had paid off and paid off well.

Xander's plan had originally been to use the hidden bombs to take out legions of their enemies, but once they'd seen the numbers of giant snakes, the boy changed the plan. Angel had marveled at how quickly the boy spun into action, quickly spreading the word through their ranks to blow up the snakes instead of the Others. By the time the vampire had been forced into the shelter, all but one of the giant serpents had been destroyed. He hoped they had now killed them all.

The soldier's voice in Xander's head had supplied the plan while the boy himself had supervised the execution. He'd smiled, mentioning some movie with Morgan Freeman for coming up with the composition of the powder used to destroy the unexpected monsters.

The vampire sighed, frustration and fatigue fighting for reign in his body. He wanted to sleep, his body craving the rest, but every cry, every clang of metal on metal brought up a new mental image and he knew there would be no rest for him, not until Xander was her with him, in arms, safe and whole.

Impatient for news, Angel growled loudly, fighting the demon within him from bursting outside for any news of the fight. The second sun had yet to rise and made it safe for the vampire to step out into the mixed rays that protected him - the same twin rays that would defeat the Others as Xander had planned.

He'd seen the fear in their eyes as the first sun began to rise. The pain that hit him at the burning rays was worth the realization from their enemy that they had been tricked. They hadn't expected such an attack, one that included the most obvious weapon, one that Xander was willing to employ.

Time passed slowly and Angel tried to focus on something, anything to take his mind off the fight just outside his safety zone. Closing his eyes, the vampire slowly began to move through the poses of Tai Chi to give himself something familiar to do while he waited.

Suddenly a loud cry cut through the air and Angel froze mid-pose. The cry multiplied, deafening and shrill and Angel knew the second sun had begun to rise. He ran out into the blinding light, smiling at the sight of their enemy fleeing before the jubilant and advancing forces.

A victory!

They had done it.

Angel spotted Xander immediately. The boy was standing on the ridge he had declared his own, unmoving as he stared out at the battlefield, watching the retreating enemy. As the vampire approached, he noted the boy's arms were hanging limp at his sides, as if they were too heavy for him to even try to lift, with or without the large sword in his hand.

The scents hit him before he was close enough to see the blood and tears pouring from the boy. Trying not to startle him, Angel quietly called out to Xander, announcing his presence as he reached out a steady hand to gently touch the boy's shoulder.

Still Xander did not move.

Coming to stand in front of the boy, Angel began to assess the immobile body before him. He noted several cuts covered Xander's arms and face, including what appeared to be a deep stab wound in his abdomen when he may have been impaled. The thought made the vampire growl deep in his throat.

Reaching up with both hands, Angel cupped the boy's cheeks, trying to pull the boy's face up, to make Xander look at him. But the hazel eyes were empty and distant, completely unseeing.

"Xander," Angel called, trying to capture the boy's attention. When Xander refused to so much as blink, he tried again even louder. "Xander!"

Nothing.

Angel shook him, slapped, growled and shouted in his face, but Xander remain frozen.

Terror shot through the vampire. What if this had broke his boy? What if Xander would never be whole again? What had happened to his boy?

Without waiting to see how the battle ended, Angel picked up his boy, careful of the sword Xander refused to relinquish, and ran as hard as he could for the Keep.
