Disclaimer: Title by Bon Jovi and characters belong to someone else, too. I own not much and especially not the people in this.
Love was awkwardly hard to define. It shouldn’t be, they both knew that, but it was. They were friends, mates, Doctor and Companion, Time Lord and Time Agent, immortal and impossible… but how hard was it to thing of the other as a lover? A partner beyond the… friendly, friendship-part of their relationship?
They did have a relationship, though. They couldn’t deny that. They wouldn’t. They even made a private joke about surprising people with it. Only they thought it funny how everyone realised they were an item. Everyone else thought it a serious relationship.
They lived like that for some time. “A new regeneration, a new attitude to not dying,” sometimes the Doctor said. Maybe a bit selfish, he sometimes thought, but he liked that new body of his and he liked Jack to like it. Jack aged only slowly. The Doctor tried to avoid meeting the Face of Boe, he didn’t want to spoil Jack for his future.
But that wasn’t love, he thought. It was natural. He would have done that for every of his companions - and there he seemed to miss a little point.
Jack died for his Doctor, even several times. Because he liked that new body and he would do that for every of his friends - and there he seemed to miss a little point.
Because the Doctor never had “casual Companions” and Jack never had “casual friends”.
It seemed all so natural to them, as natural as love came to them. Yet still afraid to lose each other in a new body and brain.
