In the aftermath, of Sheppard being fed on by a Wraith, and subsequently getting those years of his life back, Lorne is understandably hesitant to let Sheppard do much. He is more afraid of the wrath of Carson Beckett (who control the needles) than an angry Sheppard, who knows he shouldn’t be out of the infirmary in the first place. Despite the fact that Sheppard thinks he is absolutely fine, he is, which is why he is suppose to be in the infirmary anyway.
Lorne is disconcerted when Sheppard attempts to make light of his experience. He understands and realizes Sheppard only does so when he’s being scrutinized by the men under their command. Personally, Lorne has never had any experience in Atlantis so severe, and if he had...he’s not so sure he would even be capable of joking about it so soon afterwards
Back at the SGC (whose population is at least three times that of Atlantis), he did not have the type of experiences that the off-world teams joked about, save for the ones that had actual joking material. However, SG-11 was predominantly a SAR Team and explorers, which meant that they more often than not saw the aftermath of being “guests” of the Gou’ald, and he had quite a few scars from being a “guest” more than once.
Lorne remembers how O’Neill acted after several of his prison/capture/torture sessions with the Gou’ald or numerous other enemies of the day. He’s seen Sheppard behave the same way, which reassured him, since it meant that he was okay. But the last go-round with the Wraith brings back harsher memories of O’Neill’s incarceration by Ba’al and that worries him, since O’Neill had not been okay (in any sense of the word). In both instances, everything that could be done was done, but it wasn’t enough. They weren’t in time to save O’Neill then, and they hadn’t been able to save Sheppard now...and that concerns him, even though both men are still alive.
It’s when Sheppard turns up in Little Tripoli-Lorne’s office-and asks if he wants help with the paperwork... he doesn’t know if he should be really worried that the Colonel is, in fact, all right, or if he should be terrified of whatever Carson Beckett will do to him when he finds out he was an accomplice (however unwittingly) to the Colonel’s escape. He agrees to let his CO help. If nothing else, they have a data burst to Earth in two days and everyone knows that there has to be something included about the recent discovery involving the Wraith.
Lorne has come to realize why Sheppard scares his superiors back on Earth. It’s not his penchant for disobeying orders when necessary, nor his careless, arrogant ‘I-don’t-care’ attitude. It’s not his record-that black mark that most believe is the main reason his superiors want him out of Atlantis. It’s not even due to his suicidal rescue, ‘Leave-no-man-behind’ tendencies.
No. What scares them-really terrifies them-is with all these qualities and more, John Sheppard is more like Jack O’Neill than he (or anyone else) wants to believe. And the one thing the IOA and the rest of his CO’s (mostly the IOA) don’t need is another Jack O’Neill.
