And I can't be who you are

Originally, he'd meant just to run. Honestly. Just a jog in the rain, to clear his thoughts and remember that yes, he agreed to it. It was alright. In the end of the day, Morgan came home to his hut. After all, just because she said so, didn't mean she would get around to that whole non-exclusivity thing ( Read more... )

"Mitchell?" It was raining. again. And he was out in it...again. "You plan on drowning yourself in the rain again?" She spun her umbrella slowly and the lizards on it jumped and danced, goofy representations of the real thing. At least they were only blue, green, and red-orange. There were no purple lizards. Her voice was lightly teasing as she assessed the set of his shoulders and the way he held himself.

She found her way beside him and sat, lapsing into silence almost immediately, umbrella secured between a handy crack in the rocks so she didn't have to hold it up. Set at the perfect angle, it kept the both of they dry. Well. He was wet and her legs were wet...but whatever. It worked.

He didn't respond immediately to her question--no quip seemed to come immediately to mind, and after the moment passed, it would have been tacky. He was able to manage a slight, wry smile when she sat.

"Does this place get high tides?"

"We have a moon, so, probably," she murmured, folding her arms around her knees as she quirked an eyebrow at him. "You looking for a rock to chain yourself to in order to appease the sea god?"

Reese glanced at the rocks and then squinted back out across the flat blue grey wash of choppy white capped sea. It was usually brighter, but the rain had dulled it and it was closer to grey-sapphire, now.

"I'm not really a big fan of gods in general." Gods, plural, he could say without his Grandmother berating him. Especially when it probably referred to an old Goa'uld anyway.

"The rain brought it to mind."

The ocean looked different, dark and violent with the sky so gray and dreary. The rain had let up for a few minutes, but even if it started again, I don't think I could have possibly cared. I had two blankets, a small fire, and not a single Doctor Jackson in sight.

I did, however, spot Mitchell just standing there, down the beach. I watched him for a while and then left the comfort I'd created and walked over to him. As expected, the rain picked back up and my wet dress clung to me and my hair plastered itself to my face and neck.

"What are you doing?" I asked loudly over the noise of the surf. Maybe he was watching for the Odyssey.

What? A girl can hope.

He almost started at Vala's voice. He blamed it on the wind, rain, and his thoughts that he hadn't heard her approach. The surprise was enough incentive to school his expression into neutrality.

"Observing the surf."

He might have told a better lie in elementary school.

"It is interesting," I replied, stepping closer so I could take hold of his arm. "But it's not that interesting."

He glanced over at her briefly when she grabbed his arm, but his attention quickly turned back to the ocean. It was mesmerizing--countless drops of rain joining an endless flow of waves to the shore, and then running back. For all he knew, the ocean was pulled back into an abyss over the horizon.

"Its not every day you get to see that view. Tropical island and all."

"You do realize that I'm still not speaking to you over the entire football tryout incident?" Somehow he had been made a kicker for the football team when he hadn't even intended to play and had only gone to the wretched tryouts to appease Mitchell.

At the moment, he actually had no rancor over the football incident-in-progress, but with Mitchell staring out over the ocean looking like someone stole his favorite fighter jet, it made for a better opening than How are you? and was, in all likelihood, decidedly less stupid.

On the other hand, he didn't wait for a response before sitting and pulling his knees up to his chest. He'd been wandering in the rain for an hour already, trying to shake the feeling that the sun had gone with Eostre, and he would sit whether Mitchell wanted company or not.

Cam glanced over in surprise, before snorting. "Oh, c'mon, you haven't even tried yet. It'll be fun."

Clearly, that was an automatic response, because it sounded a hell of a lot more convincing than he really felt about it just now. That was just fine with him. Especially if Mohinder was as good as his word.

Looking along his shoulder at Mitchell, he gave him a piercing look. "I suppose I don't need to try it to know it will be more fun than this."

This being sitting in the rain staring at the ocean, still looking like the aforementioned pilot with the missing plane, snort notwithstanding.

"See...that depends on whether you prefer nature watching to actually doing something." He gave the briefest of wry smirks. "Sometimes its...relaxing."

Daniel had seen Mitchell go out for a jog a while ago. He'd been a little surprised with the rain and everything - he certainly wasn't committed enough to out there in this weather - but he wasn't Mitchell. Still, he kept a half an eye out for his return. Except he never did.

Finally Daniel started getting worried and put his own jogging shoes on, following the path they usually took with Anita in hopes that he was there somewhere.

His hunch was right. Mitchell was about three quarters of the way down the stretch they normally ran. Just sitting there.

"Hey. What's up?" Daniel asked, planting himself next to Mitchell.

He nearly started at Jackson's sudden appearance, but he supposed after a moment, that he should have expected one of his team to come and find him eventually. Had he been out that long?

Cam gave a small, bland smile. "Just taking a break."

"From jogging," Daniel said dryly. "In this weather." Daniel gave Mitchell a look and bumped his shoulder as if to say that of course he didn't believe that line.

He narrowed his eyes briefly. "Is there any better reason to take a break from jogging, Jackson?"

The humor he'd wanted to channel...just wasn't there.

The beach wasn't exactly on the way, but Jill had taken a small detour between New Atlantis and her own hut near the Compound. She'd intended all along to go back, but she needed a moment. A break. Something out of the ordinary and so she'd taken the pink umbrella the box had given her and she'd set out.

Finding Cameron out on the beach was unexpected, but Jill wandered over, jeans damp, but the umbrella was doing its job. "What are you doing out here?" she asked curiously.

For a few tense seconds, he thought it was Morgan, but the cant of her voice, and her attire told him it was Jill. He shrugged slightly, and gestured out toward the water.

"I was just curious whether this place has a big ol' drain somewhere out there to get rid of all this rain."

It was a ridiculously stupid thing to say, he knew that, but it was the first thing that came to mind.

"Did you find one?" Jill asked, her eyebrows lifting curiously at that answer. She wasn't sure what else to say to something like that, especially when it seemed like something was wrong. On the other hand, she didn't know Cameron all that well and she wasn't sure if she was reading him wrong. Maybe he was just distracted.

Looking out at the ocean, she frowned and then glanced back at Cameron. "Just looks like the ocean to me."

"No...well...I mean...There's no way off of here, so there's gotta be an end to it. And the ocean doesn't look like its shrunk at all...so...shouldn't it be rising, or something?"

Yeah. That made no sense. But it kind of sounded like something Sam would say. If it had made any sense.
