wedding day

The past four days had been a whirlwind of activity.

Between packing, dropping Minnie off with Izzie, making sure they had all the necessary paperwork for a wedding overseas, and emergency phone calls to their travel agent, there hadn't seemed to be enough time to get it all done.

Derek had been content with the insanity though, especially compared to the hurry-up-and-wait agonizing slowness of their plane ride. Even he had gotten anxious somewhere around hour ten which was no help to Meredith who had started out that way.

But if time had flown the weeks before now and then slowed to a crawl as they crossed the Pacific, it was nothing compared to how slowly it was passing today alone.

They had barely been in Indonesia a day and had the jet lag to prove it. It had been difficult to crawl out of their bed that morning but he had managed, stumbling into the shower and dressing in a haze while he let her sleep in.

He kissed her awake when it was time to leave and then spent the rest of the afternoon on the main island, gathering all the last minute details like the flowers they ordered, their minister, their musician, their photographer. . .

For it to be a private wedding, they had managed to assemble quite a group of random people to serve as witnesses.

But even with all of his errands and then showering and dressing in his tuxedo on the ferry boat, time was still moving way too slowly for his taste.

Now, standing in the gazebo between their condo and the ocean listening to the flautist serenade them as the sun begins to set, he would swear it's been an eternity since he saw his soon-to-be bride. Even if it's only been a handful of hours, but what does that matter? It was long enough for the adrenaline to kick in and then begin to ebb again as the jet lag took over once more. It had been long enough for him to get nervous and start fiddling with the flowers and his tie and anything else he can rearrange so that it's perfect for her. And it had been more than long enough for him to miss her, make him uneasy leaving her alone in this foreign country and just as desperate to see her again to make sure she is alright, as he is to marry her.

Although as the minute hand on his watch slowly-- so so so slowly-- creeps toward their appointed time, he's definitely more anxious to have her just be his wife already than anything else.

It feels like he's spent his whole life waiting for this moment, and in his opinion, forty one years is an awfully long time to wait to be Meredith Grey's husband.
