Rodney glances around the animal shelter, wishing that he were anywhere but here. It’s Jeannie’s fault, really. She and Kaleb told Madison that she could have a puppy for her birthday, but Madison wanted her Uncle Mer and his friend John to come with, and Jeannie was more than happy to send along an invite with her next letter to Rodney, practically blackmailing him into visiting.
He quickly spots a familiar figure approaching and frowns.
“No.” Rodney says to John and the tiny calico in the man’s arms as soon as he’s close enough.
“Aw, come on Rodney! How can you say no?” John protests. Rodney crosses his arms.
“It’s easy John. No.”
“I thought you liked cats.” John pouts.
“I do, but there is no way that we’d be able to take back with us. And even if we could, Atlantis is dangerous for people, what makes you think that it would be any safer for a cat?”
“We could keep it in our room.” John suggests. Rodney rolls his eyes.
“Yes, because the cat would like that so much. What if we die?”
John rolls his eyes. “We could give it to Teyla or Ronon. Or Cadman.” He adds quickly when Rodney’s mouth opens again.
“Wait- Cadman?”
“She likes cats. She used to have one as a kid.” John says smugly. Rodney gapes at him.
“How do you know that? Do you have some sort of psychic connection to your grunts that I don’t know about?”
“They’re not grunts Rodney, they’re Marines. And if you must know, she told me.” Before Rodney can throw in another question, like when does John ever talk to Cadman about anything, he adds, “But that’s not the point. The point is that if we ever do- die, then the cat will have some place to go.”
“No, the point is that we’re not getting a cat!” Rodney exclaims, waving his hands for emphasis.
“Rodney….” John whines, drawing his name out as long as he can. Rodney gives him the ‘I’m sorry, did you think that whining about it would make things better?’ look in response.
“That priestess did tell us that we would win success in whatever we adopt.” John adds hopefully.
“She was talking to you, and I doubt she actually wanted you to adopt something!” Rodney snapped. John moves a little closer to him and holds the kitten out, bouncing it a little. It squirms, not liking being held like a sack of potatoes and meows in protest.
Rodney gets the feeling that there is no way in hell they are leaving without that damn kitten, no matter what he says.
“Fine.” He says begrudgingly and John grins.
“See Chloe?” He says to the cat, “I knew he’d cave sooner or later.”
“You’re feeding it.” Rodney tells him. “And we’re changing the name.”
“How about Jumper?” John suggests with a grin.
“Don’t you dare.” He starts to walk away in order to find where his sister and her family had run off to when they appear around the corner, Madison holding the leash of some sort of terrier. She bounds over to John and Rodney, unable to keep still.
“Look at my new dog!” She says, as if they had a choice in the matter.
“He’s very nice.” John replies. Rodney nods, eyeing the dog warily.
“Her name’s Barbie, like the doll.” Madison informs them, keeping still long enough for Barbie to sit on Rodney’s foot. As soon as she spots the dog, Chloe starts trying to climb up John’s arm.
“Maddie, look what John has.” Jeannie points out the kitten for her daughter and Madison’s face lights up.
“A kitten!” She exclaims, sounding like it’s the biggest discovery in the history of the world. “What’s her name? Can I pet it?”
“We haven’t given her a name yet, and I think you should pay attention to Barbie. You can pet her later.”
“I think you should name her Jumper, because she likes jumping on you.” The kitten meows and Madison giggles. “She likes it!”
John looks at Rodney and grins.
