WITHOUT WORDS by
obsessed101 One minute they’re soaring through the air, the next they’re impacting the frozen lake. The front portal cracks. Water surges into the jumper.
In his last breath, Lorne orders everyone to get the hell out.
He continues to hold his breath and willingly accepts he’ll be the last to leave until every member of his team is safe.
He soon realises that every member isn’t.
Teyla’s leg is trapped.
Lorne grips her shoulder with numb fingers and gives her a firm nod before attempting to free her. Blood billows in front of his face like smoke. He blinks through the water, eyeballs freezing, vision blurred and tries to assess the damage. She’s bleeding out and she’s stuck fast. No amount of pulling and wiggling will free her.
The jumper descends; a few lights fizzle and die out. The rear compartment makes an ominous creaking noise that Lorne swears he can feel in the vibrations of the water.
He can’t leave her. Even though he’s struggling to hold his breath and his attempts futile, he cannot bring himself to swim away. He doesn’t want to inform Colonel Sheppard that he was unable to bring his team-mate home safely or tell Kana’an that his son is motherless.
It might not be his fault - he was sure something struck them before they went down - but he wouldn’t be able to forgive himself. Teyla’s supposed to die at a ripe old age and he’s supposed to go down in a blaze of glory.
His lungs are screaming now. There’s no way to swim to the surface, take a breath and then return to help Teyla. There’s no freeing her either. He can’t blow anything up, he doesn’t have McKay’s intellect or Ronon’s brute strength and the rear compartment is a wreck. Ketchwa wheat litters the water and makes it impossible to see if there’s anything else of use.
Unexpectedly, the jumper hits the lake bottom. Teyla opens her mouth and lets out a soundless scream as whatever had her pinned releases her shredded leg.
Without thinking and without any intimacy, Lorne grips her either side of her face and pushes his mouth against hers. He sacrifices his survival as naturally as…well…..breathing.
The look in Teyla’s eyes says that she doesn’t accept his air without guilt.
Lorne pulls back. His lungs burn, his vision greys, he’s vaguely aware that Teyla grabs his arm and tugs him forward but his body is spent.
The water clogs his throat and nose and then there’s nothingness.
---------------
He wakes up with Teyla’s lips pressed against his, returning the lungful of air he had so willingly given up for her.
Lorne goes to thank her but his words are swept away by the flood of water surging up his throat. He rolls onto his side and throws up. The air that he desperately needed before chokes him.
Teyla, despite being in agony herself, rubs his back and mutters words of comfort.
Lorne coughs and mercifully takes a deep breath.
