You may have noticed that there was no reading poll this month. This is because it's femslash round, and we have only one femslash story left on the reading list. After this, there're no more! So we'd take it as a kindness if y'all would offer up some of your own femslash stories, or go out and get permission to bring us someone else's ( Read more... )

I really like the complexity of the details in this story. There're lots of little grace notes, like the ambivalent feeling of scavenging for supplies on Wraith-devastated worlds, or asides about the new recruits sent to Pegasus being substandard because the State Department is holding up the foreign nationals---which also is an interesting idea in and of itself. I think these details do a wonderful job of creating a rich, satisfyingly vivid picture.

I also enjoy the lovely character dynamics---even for characters who don't get actual screen time. For example, I adore this: Sure, the guy was an asshole, but he was their asshole and people who messed with McKay that weren't Atlantean paid for it. Which was probably part of the reason Sam was having trouble. The rumors about she and McKay had been making the rounds for a while and, well, people were protective. Given how much time they spent bitching about him, it was pretty hysterical. That manages to say so much about not only Rodney, but also the entire community of Atlantis. ( ... )

I like your point about none of the men getting actual screen time - it seems strange that it could be true because they are so present but it is true and it does work very well.

I really like the way that the political is personal - the way that the feelings of the top people are reflected in the attitudes of the rest of Atlantis to certain changes. I also like the way the little political details make it feel so real.

Also, it's a very sensual story. There's a lot of casual and not-so-casual touching, but all five senses are evoked. Laura notices the colour of Elizabeth's cheeks, you can feel and hear the crunch of gravel under boots and it all bworks together very nicely to make a really rounded story.

Oh, yes---I loved that, too. I really enjoy the social and political structure of Atlantis as a general thing, and it's cool to see those things worked into the story in a way that feels so natural.
