oddly, as I read this secret, Pandora gave me a Gregorian chant written by...one John Sheppard.

Actually it's quite beautiful music. He's one of my favorite Gregorian composers. :P
(this applies only if you like Gregorian chant, I guess; I like listening to it while I write papers.)
Unless you mean, "How did (our) John Sheppard write Gregorian chants?!?"

John is definitely Rudolf.
When my mom and I first started watching SGA, we would always say that the Atlantis expedition was the "best and brightest" that Earth could live without. The Island of Misfit Toys is an analogy that's been in my head for years.
