REGRETS by
shepsgirl72 A warm breeze buffeted John as he gazed down at his father’s grave. It had been a year since Patrick’s death, and for some reason he’d felt compelled to return.
‘What do you do now?’ Ronon asked, standing patiently beside him.
‘Think,’ John replied, his voice distant even to himself.
‘About what?’
‘Regrets, mostly.’
Ronon glanced at some of the nearby monuments. ‘Are you supposed to bring flowers or something?’ he asked, nodding toward the blooms adorning so many of them.
‘He wasn’t really a flowers kind of guy.’
‘Do you wish you could speak to him?’
John shrugged. ‘I wish...I suppose...’ It was hard to say why he needed to be here. There were so many things he regretted; so many arguments, so many silences. ‘There are things I should have said...’
Ronon nodded and John supposed his friend understood, having lost so many people himself. ‘I’m gonna give you some time alone,’ Ronon rumbled, sauntering away, hands in pockets, winding a path through the stones.
An inbuilt sense for trouble now turned John’s attention toward the cemetery gates. His brother was entering carrying a spray of flowers.
Having no desire to hear yet another lecture about not staying in touch, John hurried after Ronon, secreting both his friend and himself behind an oversized monument before his brother spotted them.
‘What’s up?’ Ronon asked, tensing, ready to spring into action. John dipped his head in David’s direction. Seeing the familiar face, Ronon frowned. ‘Aren’t you gonna talk to him?’
‘Did you have any brothers?’ John asked.
‘Just every soldier in the Satedan army.’
‘That’s not quite the same...this is complicated,’ he sighed.
Ronon smiled ruefully. ‘If you’re not careful, he’s gonna end up being another of your regrets?’
As they slipped away unnoticed, John realised his friend was probably right.
