Man vs. Wild by TO BE REVEALED

The word torrential barely described the rain thundering down outside the cave where John Sheppard and his team had taken shelter.

“You want us to go out in that?” Rodney asked.

John grimaced. They had been stuck here for hours and his patience was wearing thin. “We’re already late checking in and the rain doesn’t show any sign of letting up.”

Rodney snorted. “It has to stop some time.”

Ronon rolled his eyes and exchanged exasperated looks with Teyla. “It’s only water, McKay, could be worse.”

“Yes, it could be,” Rodney shot back. “And thanks to you, Conan, it will be. Whenever anyone says ‘it could get worse,’ it usually does.”

John gathered up his gear. “The only thing getting worse is your attitude. Let’s move out.”

Rodney shook his head. “Unbelievable!”

“Do not forget this,” Teyla said. She shoved Rodney’s pack into his outstretched arms.

He caught it with a choked ‘Oomph.’

Rodney sputtered as they stepped out into the icy deluge. “Great, just great,” he muttered under his breath until his teeth began chattering so much he could no longer form words.

The Team trudged through the forest. Their pace was hampered by both the rain and the resulting mud but they splashed along doggedly.

By the time they reached the tree line, the downpour had slowed to a drizzle.

“See things are looking up already,” John said, shooting Rodney a smug look.

He had barely gotten the words out of his mouth before a low rumble reverberated through the trees. The ground trembled as the rumble grew into a loud dull whoosh.

“What was that?” Ronon asked.

“That? That would be your ‘worse’,” Rodney replied.

The rest of the team followed his line of sight to the shallow valley below them where the Stargate stood. One of the hills lining the narrow fissure had collapsed, flooding the valley with mud and debris.
From their vantage point, they could tell the Stargate had been partially covered; there was no sign of the DHD.

John let out a low whistle. “Damn. That would definitely qualify as worse.”

“Told you,” Rodney muttered.

The others ignored him and stood in silence, pondering their predicament.

“We need to take a closer look,” John said.

“Are you crazy? What if the rest of the hill comes down on our heads?” Rodney demanded.

“John is correct, Rodney,” Teyla said calmly. “We need to fully assess our predicament.”

“Unless you have a better idea,” Ronon said.

“I always have a better idea,” Rodney snapped.

His three companions folded their arms across their chests and waited.

After a beat Rodney turned bright red. “Except for now but that’s probably due to extreme hunger and mortal terror.”

John rolled his eyes. “Okay, Princess, have a Power Bar and chill while I go investigate.” He grabbed a branch to use as a walking stick and set off toward the Gate.

Rodney sullenly munched while Ronon and Teyla scouted the immediate area. Fine mess we’re in now, Rodney thought to himself.

“McKay, don’t move,” Ronon said suddenly.

“Wha-?” Rodney began then froze when he glanced down. The largest snake he’d ever seen was slithering over his foot. “Ronon, do something,” he croaked in a whisper.

With a resounding ‘thunk’ as Ronon’s knife pierced the snake’s head, pinning it to the ground.

“Good toss,” Rodney said weakly.

Teyla caught him just before he fainted and sat him down.

“Here, have some water.” She held a canteen to his lips.

Rodney took a drink. He promptly sprayed it out when he caught a glimpse of what Ronon was doing. “What the hell, Ronon? Get rid of that thing!”

“No way,” Ronon said as he finished skinning the reptile. “These make good eating and we might be here a while.”

“There’s no way I’m eating that! Do I look like Bear Grylls to you?” Rodney wrinkled his nose in disgust.

“Bear what?”

“Bear Grylls is a survivalist nut job back on Earth. He gets his jollies by being dropped off in the middle of nowhere with no gear and eating revolting things. You’d love him.”

Ronon grinned. “Can we get him on the Team?”

Rodney shot Ronon a sour look. “Ha, ha.”

Teyla spoke up. “John is signaling for us to join him.”

The muck was knee deep in places and littered with rocks and other debris. Picking their way through the mess, the Team slowly made their way to the Gate.

“We’re gonna have to dig our way out, so roll up your sleeves and get to work,” John said.

Ronon and Teyla set aside their gear and began moving aside chunks of earth blocking the gate.

“This is so not happening,” Rodney said, closing his eyes as if to wish the scene away.

“You too, Sunshine,” John said slapping Rodney’s shoulder.

They dug the rest of the day and into the night and after a brief rest period, including a dinner of roasted snake, they dug some more.

By daybreak they had unearthed the DHD and were able to dial home.

Elizabeth greeted them at the Gate. “What happened? Is everyone all right?”

“Everyone’s fine,” John assured her. “Mother Nature delayed us a bit.”

“More like Mother Nature kicked our asses!” Rodney huffed. “Now if you’ll excuse me, I’m going to go scrub mud from places it has no right to be.”
