A WARRIOR´S TALE by TO BE REVEALED

I am a Tiloctigit knife. That might not mean anything to you, since you´re clearly too young to remember, but let me tell you that the Tiloctigit knives were known throughout the galaxy for their superior quality. Only the finest steel was used, only the best craftsmen worked on them, and each knife had to be approved by the guild before it got the traditional spiral etching. See, here, it´s still clearly visible. And the three stars mean that I´m a noble´s knife, only to be carried by nobles or knife-play masters. Highest quality.

Well, Tiloctik was culled, you see. Decades ago, I´m not sure how long. Many knives broke, and even more were lost, either immediately or later.

How I survived? Now, that´s an interesting story. See, I was a gift to a noble who was also a very good fighter. I was the star of many throwing contests, and he knew he could rely on me. I was his most treasured possession!

...until my handle got scratched. It was an accident. Anyway, he gave me to his little daughter - she was young, but fierce, and I knew that one day she was going to be a famous fighter. And she had the proper respect for a knife like me, unlike some people.

When the Wraith came, the noble sent his daughter off-world and she survived. I served her faithfully her whole life, and when she was old she gave me to her own son.

No, she wasn´t exactly a warrior, but she still practiced. And I always kept her safe from wild beasts and raiders and so on. It was an honorable existence.

The son, on the other hand… He didn´t have much of a talent for knife-play, to be honest. Too clumsy and lazy. I was utterly wasted on him. Just imagine, he lost me. Lost me! Only the greatest fools lose Tiloctigit knives.

What followed were the most boring years of my life. I lay in a cave, completely useless, and had nearly given up on someone ever finding me. But fortunately, one day our current Master found the cave when he was looking for shelter from the Wraith.

It was a meeting destined by fate, I tell you. Oh, I knew straight away that he wasn´t a knife-player - it´s immediately apparent in the movements. You can feel if someone has proper balance and the necessary elegance for proper knife-play. And this human didn´t, but he came remarkably close for a layman. He was a fighter, too, and a short time after we first met we already killed our first Wraith together.

I say our first, because many more followed. He had other knives, too, but he was experienced enough to recognize masterful craftsmanship when he saw it, and he always preferred me above all others. The others sometimes got lost, in trees or in the bodies of dead Wraith when he was in a hurry, but he always retrieved me. It was truly refreshing to be appreciated and put to such good use.

Yes, I know he has a strange preference for his gun. And that is the one thing I never truly understood. It must be the dramatics or the flashy red light, but honestly, a gun is unwieldy and unreliable. It must be because he wasn´t taught properly. You´ll get used to it, as I had to.

Did I tell you that I even cut into the flesh of hive ships? Yes, indeed. Trust me, you will probably see the inside of a hive ship sooner than you´d like. He is adventurous like that, a true warrior. You should try to make yourself as useful as possible, otherwise he won´t find it necessary to make sure he doesn´t lose you. It happened to one of the knives he´d had for a long time, a Renowan fighting knife. We were quite well acquainted. But this is our destiny: to fight for our masters, side by side, until they die or we break.

…yes, and sometimes we get lost, too. Do you have to be so pessimistic? Be glad you have me to guide you. I have never heard of this “San Francisco” you claim to be from, so it can´t be that famous, and you don´t look like you´ve had any fighting experience. No, the gym does not count. He doesn´t have any challenging sparring partners. And he could use a bit more practice, but he´s still so much better than most other humans. One day you´ll understand how much undeserved luck you had, and then you´ll thank me for advising you, I´m sure.
