THE SWEET SAUCE OF LABOR by shepsgirl72

Teyla lay back against some cushions, absently stroking gentle circles on her expanding stomach while the sun warmed her skin. She tired so much more easily these days. This trip away from Atlantis had come at the perfect time for her; the overwhelming desire to find her people had consumed her every thought for months now she desperately needed a rest.

Shouting disturbed her from her relaxation and she lifted her head to look toward the ocean. John was riding a wave, whooping with joy as Ronon wobbled alongside him. The colonel looked the more confident of the two, but Ronon had improved vastly since she’d last watched them at play together. She hoped one day her son would have a friend to share such moments with.

John reached the shore first and gracefully scooped up his surfboard without missing a beat. Ronon, not yet as skilled, staggered a little and had to run back to collect his board before the tide took it back out. They both ran back toward where Teyla lay beside Rodney, who although also supposedly enjoying a day off, was tapping away on his laptop as usual.

They both fell to their knees beside their friends, panting from the exertions of their play.

‘Sure I can’t tempt you to catch a few waves with me?’ John asked her, his eyes glistening greener than ever in the sunlight.

She smiled at him, happy to see him looking relaxed for the first time since she’d broken the news of her pregnancy to him. There had been an undeniable tension between the two of them since then, one she’d had great difficulty understanding, but this day at the beach had helped to put that behind them. She’d missed this playfulness more than she’d realised. ‘No...thank you. I think I would prefer to stay right here and continue with my meditations.’

‘Meditations?’ Rodney squeaked, tearing his eyes from his screen at last. ‘I thought you were listening to me. I’ve just spent the past hour telling you about quantum entanglement.’

‘Your rhythmic words help me to find my centre and feel truly rested,’ she lied, hoping to allay his annoyance before it really kicked in.

Her tactic worked. Rodney’s mouth twisted up into a crooked smile. ‘Really? Well, in that case I’ll tell you all about Heisenberg’s Uncertainty Principle.’

John turned away, hiding his laughter. Ronon didn’t bother to be so subtle, grinning with glee as Teyla forced on a smile. ‘That will be fascinating, Rodney.’

‘How about a run?’ John suggested, giving Ronon a good-natured punch on the deltoid. ‘Up there and back.’

Ronon squinted in the direction he’d pointed - a steep incline further down the beach. ‘Easy. I bet I make it back before you even get to the top.’

They scrambled to pull on their shoes, cackling at each other’s ham-fisted attempts to tie laces in five seconds flat, then wrestling to gain the advantage before setting off at a sprint.

‘Oh, yes. Thank you. Do you have any idea how difficult it is to work with sand jamming up your keyboard?’ Rodney called after them.

Teyla wished she had the energy to follow her friends. Her son stirred, tiny feet kicking against her ribs and reminding her of his presence. Despite the discomfort she smiled. This little one might one day catch waves and run along the beach just as John and Ronon were, and she would be able to join in then.

For now, she would have to be content with such dreams and relax to the hypnotic effects of Rodney’s favourite quantum theories.
