This is not the end

The Genficathon will change, but it can continue!

friendshipper has done a great job these past four years (thank you!) but is bowing out. That doesn't mean the days of the SGA gen fic fest are over, though ( Read more... )

I would definitely be interested. I didn't tick off many options because I am fairly flexible with those issues. That said, I loved the genficathon and would like to see it remain highly similar. The only change that I am personally interested in would be the ability to go in and edit it myself at some point. This is not because there have been any problems, but because I obsess over small details after the fact and would like to go in and fiddle with things, however necessary or unnecessary it may be.

Yes, the ability to do edits after posting would be nice! (I could have asked Friendshipper, but I'm shy.)

Thanks for responding!

I would like to find a way to do that. AO3 fic-hosting would allow it pretty much automatically (members can post and edit their own stories, with the author hidden by AO3 until the reveal); at LJ, it would require using sockpuppets to do much the same thing and manual editing in of the author at reveal time. (Or, of course, keeping moderator posting and asking the moderator to make all edits.) But I know how frustrating it is not to be able to edit, so I would definitely be keeping that aspect in mind.

Thanks for responding! And I'm glad to see you're interested.

One advantage of AO3 is that it would allow the writers to post their own stories, retaining edit abilities, but with the stories appearing to be posted by Anonymous until the collection is set to reveal. (Something similar is possible at LJ, but it requires creating sockpuppets, and revealing requires editing the post. That's an option if the fest remains LJ-only, but so far no one has said that AO3 would be a dealbreaker.)

I certainly know the urge to edit after the fact!

I don't know that I'll still be up for writing SGA next year, just because it's been a while since I was actively fanning on the show. But I've always enjoyed this ficathon, and if I do sign up again, I wouldn't want it to change too much. That said, I do like the way the AO3 is set up, so it if moved over there I wouldn't mind at all.

Thanks for responding!

I hope you'll be motivated to participate (though I certainly understand competing demands). I'd try to keep it similar to the current structure, I think, since most folks seem to like it that way, and keep LJ coordination, but AO3 fic-hosting does seem as if it would help, so I'm glad to hear you wouldn't mind that.

First off, I'm excited that the gen ficathon is not dead!! I have no idea if I'll be able to enter a fic or not next year, it depends on all sorts of things, though if you did the artist match up as well, I'm fairly certain I could take part in that! I hope you keep the minimum word count to around 1000 - I know there's more chance of me entering with a low min word count!

I'm not sure about A03, not having an account and not wanting yet another archive site to put my fics on, but I guess it depends on how it would work. If you are posting the fics on A03, then I guess that'd be okay. I'd prefer it to remain on LJ, though.

I kind of like things how they were this year - but if change is necessary, I'm sure I'll adapt!! :)

Thanks for responding!

I should have been clearer with the minimum option. I know some folks don't want, say, drabbles to qualify, but I'm not expecting to set a minimum limit any higher than 1k words. Stories seem to have a length they just want to be.

And if you'd be up for handling or assisting with artist-matching, that would be wonderful. I really liked the addition of art this year, but I've never run anything fest-wise, so other hands will certainly be appreciated ( ... )

Depending on how things are in RL next year (you can never know what might happen!), then yes, I should be able to help with the artist matching again!

I think using AO3 would be okay, along with the LJ presence re: coordinating and announcements. It might push me into archiving a few of my other fics there, and does mean I can edit should I notice a type later on!!

Very cool; thanks! (I know what you mean about RL; I'll have to make arrangements to make sure this can happen at all.)

I'd be happy if you continued the genficathon! I had a lot of fun the past two years. I really liked how it was set up and organized and would prefer to keep most of that. I can see how AO3 hosting would be easier, but I'm not that familiar with it yet. Maybe a combination? The fic on the AO3, but daily announcements on the Lj comm?

Thanks for responding!

That's actually exactly the direction I'm leaning: fic on AO3, so that folks can post and edit their own stories without revealing their identities until the collection is revealed, but all other coordination on LJ (or on LJ & DW) since I don't actually see as good a coordination forum on AO3! I'm hoping that will make folks feel most welcome and involved.

The only thing that I really liked about the first year that wasn't carried forward (for reasons that I completely understand), was the shared prompts for the week (in addition to the simplicity/openess of the prompts). I really found myself looking forward to seeing how the answer to each prompt changed depending on both the genre and the author. But I might be the only one who really got a kick out of that, not to mention it makes the ficathon much harder to administrate.

All that aside, I'm hoping, muse and health issues permitting, I'll be able to participate next year. (Although if something does come up, will there be a bonus round next year?)

That does sound challenging. I think there was a bit of that, though, at least in that I saw several different fics with matching prompts? Not sure if that's quite what you were thinking, though.

I do hope you'll be able! As for a bonus round ... sure? Maybe? Certainly that's an option, whether that's a post-reveal posting period, or some sort of "treats" optional add-on, or some other concept. I'll have to remember to ping folks for interest nearer the date.
