Climbing the steps up the tower had become a ritual to Radek. When he was younger, his grandfather used to tell him tales of towers from which the faithful were called to prayer. In his stories, the towers were solid beacons of stone. But in this Ancient city, the towers were glass, seemingly as delicate as the air.

As always, he began to circle the room, ignoring the low couch that was the rooms’ only feature. From this side of the tower, his view was filled with the complexity of the city, a mix of towers and structures, a forest of steel and glass. His home, now.

Radek paused and leaned against the glass, sighing at the view. Carbon scoring marked his city like an obscene brand. One of the lower towers was still gently smoking, its once-straight lines now bent and broken. Radek rubbed his arms, almost surprised to find there were no matching marks on his own skin.

Finally, he turned away, seeking solace in the desert of the ocean. But even here, he could see wreckage, floating debris. He stared for a moment, then turned away.

He suddenly understood how people could feel called to pray.
