Summary: The ultimate responsibility to one family costs another.
“He’s too quiet,” Sheppard said. “Shouldn’t he be screaming and throwing things?”
“What’s there to say?” asked Ronon, and looked at him like he actually wanted an answer.
Across the room, McKay handed back a tablet to lab technician, muttering something about wrong schematics. “I’ll look at it…I mean, Zelenka will look at it after you make corrections. Don’t initialize it with those levels unless you want to blow up the city.” He let out a deep breath audible even at that distance. “Okay, anything else?” Immediately, another tech stepped up, extending another tablet and speaking in techno-babble.
“Rodney doesn’t do stoicism,” Sheppard retorted. “It’s wrong.”
“Something is wrong,” Teyla reminded them both, wrapping each small, strong hand around their respective arms as if she thought they were going to go make things worse. “He has lost his sister.”
Sheppard shifted in place. “I know,” he muttered. Then he cupped a hand to his earpiece. “Apollo is ready. They already have his stuff.”
Ronon crossed his arms, jerking free of Teyla’s grip. “I don’t see why he can’t come back.”
Teyla retracted her arm and took her hand off Sheppard, as well. For not saying anything, she did a great job of communicating just how much Ronon deciding to be surly wasn’t helping anyone. Sheppard knew she was right, but he also didn’t do anything when Ronon scowled and kept going.
“The kid could come here.”
Now, Sheppard lent Teyla a hand. “The IOA would never approve transferring a little Canadian girl here, Ronon. And they shouldn’t. It’s not a place for kids. It’s barely a place for adults.”
Ronon huffed through his nose.
“Ronon, the child has lost both her parents,” Teyla said. “Our friend will only be at a few weeks distance. We are all upset, but he must go to her. He is her family now.”
“He has to be with his family,” Sheppard agreed, but he couldn’t sound enthusiastic about it.
Ronon scowled again and it was Sheppard’s turn to put a hand on his arm and the other on Teyla, as Rodney shouldered his duffle and walked towards them to say goodbye.
