Summary: John had always planned on going out fighting. (tag for The Siege)

The stars sparkled like ice in the inky depths of space stretched before me. I turned the jumper, banking until the first hive ship came into view. Its massive bulk blocked out the stars as I drew closer, until it filled the windshield.

“They haven’t detected my approach,” I reported into my radio, “The weapon is armed and ready. I’m going in.”

I could imagine the faces of my friends as they stood before the screen displaying the long range scanner. The screen that would soon flash with white as I flew down the throat of the enemy and the bomb detonated, blowing up the hive ship. But there would still be another hive, and I feared who would have to deliver the next bomb.

I slid through space, the cloak making my jumper undetectable. An invisible spaceship, I smiled, that sure overshadowed my expectations of what the Air Force would offer me. I’d wanted to fly, and I had gotten so much more. The jumper’s mental component made it amazing to fly; far surpassing anything I’d piloted back on Earth.

It wouldn’t be long now before the explosion took out me and the hundreds of wraith aboard the ship. At least I’d die fighting, and flying too. I’d certainly be going out with a bang.

What I didn’t expect was the chance to see the explosion take place before me, but that’s what I got. The bright flash of light washed over me as I stood on the bridge of the Deadalus. The explosion’s brilliant blue glow shot through the surrounding space, brighter than all the stars in sight.

I knew I’d probably die fighting, and maybe flying too, but not today. And when it did happen, I’d go out with a bang.
