Elizabeth rolled over and smiled as her eyes met Rodney McKay’s. He was looking at her, as he often did in the mornings. He was always awake before Elizabeth. She sometimes wondered if he ever slept.

“Good morning,” he said, stroking her hair gently.

“Mmmm....morning,” she answered, leaning in to kiss him lightly on the lips.

“How did you sleep?” Rodney asked as he traced a line down her neck.

“I slept fine,” she said, then smiled coyly at him. “What about you? Did you sleep at all?”

It was becoming a kind of joke between them. Rodney smiled and flopped onto his back.

“Not a wink,” he answered. “Too busy having filthy thoughts about you.”

Elizabeth smiled and sat up in the bed. They had another day of uncertainty in front of them, though every day was filled with uncertainty since they had arrived in Atlantis. Elizabeth stood and stretched, the sheet falling back onto the bed. Rodney opened his eyes and watched her naked form cross the room and throw on a robe.

“Don’t forget we have a briefing in an hour, Rodney,” Elizabeth said as she tied the robe shut.

“Right,” Rodney said, heaving himself out of bed and throwing on his clothes. “See you in an hour.”

Elizabeth smiled as he left her quarters.

John Sheppard whistled as he walked through the corridors of Atlantis. Suddenly, an arm darted out from nowhere and jerked him through a doorway. John was about to attack when he felt warm lips on his mouth. He returned the kiss readily but broke away after a moment.

“We have a briefing in an hour, you know,” he said. “You sure you want to go getting me all aroused like that?”

“I always want you aroused like that,” Rodney said, a sly smile crossing his face. He pulled John in for another kiss but John pulled back.

“Last night wasn’t enough for you?” he grinned, then added. “I guess that both Elizabeth and myself just aren’t enough for your insatiable needs.”

“Well, not apart,” Rodney said, the sly smile back and a mischievous twinkle in his eyes.

“You know she’d never go for that. Hell, you can’t even tell her about us,” John said.

“I just don’t know how she’d take it,” he replied as he looked at the floor. “And I just can’t stand to hurt her.”

“That’s the last thing I want, Rodney,” John said, putting a comforting hand on the scientist’s shoulder. “But it’s going to hurt her more to find out you’ve been sneaking around behind her back.”

“I know,” Rodney said glumly. John pulled Rodney toward him and gently kissed his soft lips.

Elizabeth walked back to her quarters after the briefing. She was in a good mood after the wonderful night and the ideas they had discussed in the briefing about generating power to the shield to Atlantis. She certainly wasn’t prepared for what she saw as she rounded the corner.

Rodney and John were locked together, fingers entwined, kissing. They broke apart as she stopped short and John’s face went several different shades of red as Rodney tried to speak.

“Elizabeth! What - We were- this isn’t what it looks like!”

“It looks to me like you’re kissing John,” Elizabeth said, unnaturally calm considering the shock she’d just had. She folded her arms across her chest as she stared at the two men. “Rodney, what’s going on?”

“I told you to just be straight with her,” John mumbled as he stepped back from Rodney.

“Are you telling me this has been going on for a while now?” she said, looking from Rodney to John and back again.

“It was after I’d already been with you, Elizabeth,” Rodney said quietly. For the first time since she’d met him, Elizabeth was witnessing Rodney McKay at a loss for words.

“And you didn’t feel you could tell me?” she asked, her eyes softening.

“Tell you that I was sleeping with both you and Major Sheppard? How exactly would I have gone about doing that?” The oh-so-familiar sarcasm that cropped up when Rodney went on the defensive was seeping into his voice.

“Rodney,” Elizabeth began and walked toward the two men who had become very close to her. “You could have just told me. It’s alright.”

Both men’s eyes went wide at this and Elizabeth had to stifle a laugh.

“What, you both thought I was some old stick-in-the-mud who frowns on homosexuality? Well, you were both wrong.” She leaned in and gave Rodney a quick kiss and then turned to John and smiled wickedly before leaning in and giving him a deep, passionate kiss. Rodney’s jaw dropped open as Elizabeth broke the kiss, her lips lingering for a moment on John’s lower lip.

“Elizabeth - ” Rodney tried to say something intelligent but words had escaped him again. John looked equally as stunned.

“Just promise me one thing, Rodney,” Elizabeth said as she turned to leave. “No more sneaking off to John in the middle of the night. You need more sleep.”

“So you don’t want us to - “ Rodney began but stopped short as the sly smile crossed Elizabeth’s face again.

“I’m not saying that,” she said. “I’m just saying that ‘three’s not always a crowd.’”

Elizabeth smiled to herself as she headed back to her quarters, leaving two very dumbfounded men in her wake.
