Title: Sacrifice
Author: jennytork aka Enola Jones

Word Count: 440
Rating: T
Characters: John, Rodney, Teyla, Elizabeth, Carson
Warnings: A forced kiss between two men offscreen.
Spoilers: None.
A/N: I have no idea how to classify this. I consider it gen, as they were forced to kiss, but it might not be read that way. Also, I have no beta so everything you read is my fault.
Summary: Protocol gone horribly wrong. Sheppard is forced to kiss McKay, and his culinary choices make Rodney very, very sick.

He'd watched in guilt and horror as Rodney had collapsed before his eyes. The barrister had gasped in horror and dawning realisation, but John had had no time for that.

He had jerked out Rodney's epipen and slammed it into his thigh while Teyla dialed the Gate. Once it was open, she had half-screamed into the radio to have Carson there - they were bringing through....

John hadn't heard any more. He'd lifted Rodney like a child and had run with him through the gate - not caring who'd seen. And Carson had caught up with them partway to the Infirmary.

And it was there that John had just finished telling Carson and Elizabeth the story.

Carson nodded and headed back to Rodney, working on the slowly recovering man. It had been too damn close - but they'd gotten him there in time.

Elizabeth sighed deeply. “It's not your fault, John.”

“It is. I shouldn't have eaten--”

“John, you had no idea of that planet's customs. You ate that pie in perfect innocence.”

John shook his head, running his hands through his hair in agitation. “I don't like Rodney,” he said, looking at Elizabeth. “Not like that. I mean--”

“He's your friend,” Elizabeth said, squeezing John's shoulder. “It wasn't you that initiated the kiss. It was forced on you by that world's custom. And you made it plain to Rodney that you'd eaten lemon pie for dessert and it might hurt him. He was aware - and he chose to not threaten an interplanetary incident by refusing the affectionate kiss the Barrister insisted you perform as a goodbye act.”

John didn't look like he was hearing her. Carson reappeared just then, and looked right at John.

John gulped. “He's --”

“He'll be all right,” Carson said. “He's angry - but not at you.”

John gasped, pushing past him to Rodney. “......you're not---”

Rodney shrugged. “Why? My choice.” Sleepy from the medication and the attack, his eyes drifted closed. “Sides, Kirk - your kissing prowess is vastly overrated.”

Smiling, the banter showing him more than the others' assurances their friendship was intact and undamaged, John shot back, “I can't believe I kissed you!”

Keeping with the Kirk quote, Rodney quipped, “Must've been your life's ambition.” And then he was asleep - resting well.

John sighed. He would be okay - Rodney would be okay. And that was all that mattered.

They'd check harder for anthropological information in the Ancient data base from now on. To avoid nasty surprises like this.

And though he didn't say anything to Rodney - John privately determined he'd never eat lemon pie again. He couldn't bear the taste reminding him what he'd been forced to do to his best friend.
