Shinigami

Dr. Brown convulsed one more time before going limp. John stood over her and waited for her to get up. Katie Brown looked around in confusion. She caught sight of John and her eyes widened in surprise. Seeing him dress in black wasn’t an unusual sight but the style was. He wore elegantly pressed black, linen slacks, a black button up silk shirt which had been left undone at the throat. Over top of this he had on a long, black kimono with long flowing sleeves. He had left the kimono undone so it framed his slim form. John gestured to her and she turned to find her body lying on the ground. She looked up at John and asked, “What’s going on?”

“You died.”

Katie jumped slightly at John’s voice. It had echoed hollowly as if from some great distance. She asked tentatively, “If I’m dead how come you’re talking to me?”

“I’m a Shinigami. I collect the souls of the dead and escort them to Soul City,” he replied.

“A Shinigami?”

“A Death.”

“You’re Death!”

“No, I’m a Death. I am one of many,” John corrected softly. “Now Katie, it is time to take you to Soul City.”

“What will happen to me there?”

“Well you go to your version of heaven or you can be reincarnated. It is your choice.” John told her and then extended his hand toward her “Shall we?”

Katie took his hand and they stepped into the light. A few minutes later John appeared in his quarters. He glowed for a moment and once again he was in the boxers he had been wearing just before Katie had died. John sighed; being a Shinigami for the Atlantis expedition was tough. He had escorted the souls of many he knew and liked here whereas in the areas he had been in charge of in the past picking up someone he knew had been a rare occurrence.

He remembered when he first became a Shinigami. He had been sixteen and his father had been stationed in Japan. Something had attacked the base and his mother had been badly injured. That was John had seen him and the thing that had hurt his mother. He had watched as the Shinigami had battled what he later learned were called The Shapeless. During the battle the Shinigami had been gravely injured and had been unable to continue the fight. The Shapeless had also been injured but not enough to stop its rampage. John had asked the Shinigami, Kyo what he could do to help. He could still remember Kyo’s reply as clearly as it had happened yesterday.

“Become a Shinigami. I will give you half of my power but I warn you the transformation will be painful.”

“I’ll do it!”

“Then stand in front of me.” Kyo drew his katana and pointed it at John’s heart from where he sat on the ground. “Ram my blade through your heart and you will gain the power you need to defeat The Shapeless.”

John smirked and grabbed the katana, pushing it into his chest. The pain was indescribable but he knew that in the end it would be worth it. A blinding light had formed around him and his faded jeans and tee-shirt disappeared to be replaced by the outfit he would wear as a Shinigami.

John had learned later that he would be a Shinigami forever or until a Shapeless managed to “kill” him. After he had destroyed the Shapeless he and Kyo had had a long talk about his role as a Shinigami. Kyo had trained him up until his father was posted back to the States.

John chuckled softly as he remembered how difficult it had been for Kyo to train him. Their powers had been so different. Kyo had used more physical attacks like his katana and hand to hand power attacks. John on the other hand commanded elemental beings. Of all the Shinigami in existence he was one of the handful that could summon and control Suzaku the Phoenix of Fire, Seiryu the Dragon of water, Gembou the Earth Turtle, and Byako the White Tiger of Air.

John crawled back into his bed and the warm body in it. The past was the past and he had to get up early tomorrow. He curled up around Rodney. His lover hadn’t moved since he left. It was a good thing Rodney was such a deep sleeper. He never would have been able to keep his secret otherwise.

Rodney looked around the ravaged village. Smoke drifted from the smoldering ruins and he saw people stumbling around weeping over lost loved ones. He shook his head; the humans in this galaxy had enough problems with the Wraith. Did they have to attack each other as well?

A movement at the corner of his eye caught his attention. A young boy was trying to comfort his mother who was clutching his dead body to her chest and wailing. Rodney closed his eyes and shook his head sadly. He could do nothing for the spirit of the boy or his mother. He learned at a very young age that nobody believed him when he said he could see and speak to the dead. He quickly realized it would be best to hide his ability from both the living and dead. It made his life infinitely easier.

He moved toward Teyla, ignoring the spirit of the dead child behind him. After a minute of discussion with Teyla they decided to bring help from Atlantis for the villagers. On his way out of the village, Rodney failed to see the arrival of John dressed in the robes of his office. John extended his hand to the child and said something. The child regarded him gravely for a moment before placing his hand in John’s. They disappeared in a flash of light, leaving a grieving mother behind.

Another planet, another mission and another destroyed village. Rodney shook his head as his blue eyes skimmed over the shades of the dead and their grieving family members. Whoever was attacking these villages was extremely twisted. They only killed and destroyed. They didn’t take anything or anyone. It was like -.

Rodney’s eyes widened as a spirit raced into the village bleeding from open wounds. Rodney could not believe what he was seeing and wondered what the hell was going on. He knew that spirits should not be able to bleed. They were incorporeal nothing would be able to hurt them. That is when he saw it.

It was some kind of monster. He stared up at the behemoth. The thing was all black with a stark white face. Sharp, spikey hair emerged from its head and it had very sharp and very large claws. Rodney swallowed and muttered, “Fuck, what is that thing?”

It paused in its chase and it looked down at Rodney. It smiled at him showing its very sharp teeth. “You can see me. How interesting. It has been a long time since I could eat the soul of one who could see the dead.”

“Oh god,” Rodney breathed.

He was in deep shit and there was no way out and no one to save him. He was the only living person that could see the monster. That was until John who had been standing beside him muttered, “Shit!”

John stepped forward and a glowing light surrounded him and the clothes hew was wearing faded away to be replaced by elegantly pressed black, linen slacks, a black button up silk shirt which had been left undone at the throat. Over top of this he had on a long, black kimono with long flowing sleeves. He had left the kimono undone so it framed his slim form. Rodney eyes turned a darker shade of blue as he looked his lover up and down. His attention was drawn back to the monster as it chuckled hollowly.

“Well this is a surprise. I have not run into a Shinigami in forever.” It laughed maniacally and then said, “I will have a feast today, the souls of a Shinigami and a Seer of the Dead.”

John’s eyes narrowed, bringing his hands with his pinky, ring and middle gingers curled together and his index fingers and thumbs shaping and L and whispered, “Not this day or any other! Oh twelve gods who protect me. I beg of you, hear my plea. Flaming wings appear before me. EXPLODE!”

Rodney watched as John began to float in the air when he began his chant. Mystical sigils formed around him and when John yelled the finally word a fiery being formed behind him. A scream of rage emerged from the giant bird as it attacked the Shapeless that was fleeing before it. The Shapeless had begun to flee as the bird had taken shape, whimpering in fear. The Shapeless screamed and writhed in torment and began to dissolve when the bird sank its flaming claws into its body. The fight was over in a few minutes.

John fell to his knees and the bird disappeared. Rodney rushed to his side, cradling him in his arms. “Colonel, are you alright?”

“Yeah, just a little tired. Summoning Suzaku takes a lot out of me.”

“Colonel, just what are you?”

“As the Shapeless said, I’m a Shinigami.”

“Elaborate.”

“A Shinigami is in simple terms Death. We collect the souls of the dead and escort them to Soul City where they are judged and then sent to the heaven or hell of their particular religion or they are reincarnated.” John replied.

“What’s with the hollow, booming voice?” Rodney asked.

“I’m a Death, Rodney. It is expected.”

“Alright,” Rodney muttered and then looked around the decimated village. The survivors were staring at them in awe. “Ah, what are we going to tell them?”

John smirked and replied, “Nothing. There minds have already come up with a reasonable explanation for what happened. Get Teyla and Ronon and then go get a medical team for the villagers. I have some souls to collect.”

Rodney nodded, a small smile crossing his face. “I’m surprised you’ve been able to keep this from me for so long. In the three years we have known each other I haven’t caught you collecting souls once before now.”

“I know,” John replied as he grabbed the soul of the boy the Shapeless had chased.

“Wait, John. I have a question to ask.”

John looked over his shoulder at Rodney and arched a brow. “What?”

“What are the Shapeless?”

“The Shapeless are the souls of those who had been filled with hate and evil when they died that they could not move on. They were missing their heart and so began eating other souls in order to find what they are missing.”

“Oh.”

John smiled at him from the circle of souls that had gathered around him and then they disappeared in a flash of light. Rodney sighed and headed to the Stargate to call in a medical team. He’d question John about how he became a Shinigami in the privacy of their rooms later on tonight.
