Honestly, this was the first story idea the challenge threw at me, and most of it took shape walking around my sister's college campus.

And that particular detail was inspired by my ninth-grade English teacher and his Bidlack/Thompson method of... I forget what. Some kind of analysis, I think.
Details are what usually make stories for me. I tend towards a sort of verbal pointillism.
