This is what my mind comes up with if it's left on its own to long.
Disclamer: SGA belongs to the people it belongs to, I'm just speculating.
Not Beta-read at all, so it is most likely rife with mistakes.

Sgt. Bates walked casually down the corridors of Atlantis. Casually being in this case slightly less paranoid than usual. The Athosians were behaving themselves, various trade negotiations were going well, and the scientists were safe and well-fed. All was more or less right with the world.
He paused by the partially open door of one of the gyms. It was fairly far off the beaten track and he could hear the dull thwack of fists and feet hitting a punching bag in simple, repetitive patterns.
“So, when are you going to tell everyone?”
Sgt. Bates was instantly more alert; this was a voice he didn’t recognize. He waited. Discretion, after all, was the better part of valor.
“I don’t know.”
Major Sheppard then, but who was he talking to?
“They deserve to know.” That other voice; There was something off about that voice.
“Well, yeah, but my command is tenuous as it is, and it isn’t exactly like the U.S. military approves of its officers withholding vital Intel.”
Full Major Sheppard sarcasm, he was genuinely nervous about whatever it was.
“We aren’t in contact with earth, and even if we do establish contact again, do you really think that this will be their top priority”
Something about that voice was just…alien.
“If it’s one more reason to get me out of this command, yeah, I do.”
Sheppard was more worried about his command than Sgt. Bates had previously been aware; that was good to know.
“The SGC is always happy to have allies.”
“That may be, it’s not like I was there for very long and anyway, I think that they’ll have more of a problem with the fact that I failed to mention that my hair is really a sentient alien species whose emissary I’ve been since high school.”
Huh. Well, that explained quite a few things.
“I still think they’d all be better off knowing.” “We’ll see.”
Hmm, it sounded like they’d had this argument before.

Sgt. Bates resumed walking. As he reached the transporter he decided he was going to have to make sure Major Sheppard knew he was doing a good job: he was a good CO, but he was new to a command like this, and if he kept doubting himself it could get him into trouble. He’d have to be subtle about it; he didn’t want to spook the Major; he was like one of the geeks, more delicate than he let on.
Also, when they re-established contact with earth, he was going to have to put some money into the furling betting pool.
He added this new information to his mental to-do list as he stepped out of the transporter and kept moving, right now he had field safety training with the biologists.
Still, it never hurt to be cautious. He paused for a minute in an empty corridor to practice: “No Gen. O’Neill, I had no idea this was happening.”
