Fair Share
Radek knew he’d pay for what he’d done, but he was sure his spoils would be completely worth any punishment Rodney and Sheppard could come up with. Neither was creative enough to truly get revenge on him. He hoped, at least; sometimes Sheppard was capable of surprising Radek.
It’s not like he wouldn’t share with them eventually, just…not yet. Not until he’d had his own chance to revel in his prize. He was fully justified in keeping from them, definitely, for as soon as one of them found out, the whole city would, and then Doctor Weir would want it and Colonel Caldwell would want to take it back to Earth and then it would possibly be years before Radek saw it again.
Yes. He’d made the right decision.
He believed that wholeheartedly up until the moment he approached the lab and heard his name shouted in perfect unison by two instantly recognizable voices. Truly Sheppard sometimes did surprise him, for there was no way on any planet that Rodney would have found the compartment behind the wastebasket. Sheppard must have been poking around again.
Clearly, from the in-turns excited and angry voices he really didn’t want to be nearing, they had figured out what it did and why he’d hidden it. He paused near the door and listened for a while longer, gathering his strength for the upcoming barrage.
Sheppard’s voice turned sly. “What does Radek hate most?”
Rodney, on the other hand, sounded puzzled. “Besides being in the field? I don’t know, children?” There was a long pause, then a satisfied-sounding, “Oh. Oh, I get it. Yes, that’s very good.”
Radek didn’t get it, but he was sure he would in time. He’d pay for his greed, but it had been extremely satisfying while it lasted.
