Title: Gunshots and Memories
Author: Lilas
Spoilers: None
Summary: John sees dead people. More specifically, his dead mother.
Author: My first try the SGAHC 5-minute challenge prompt. Yikes. This
was really hard and turned out really short. And I'm not sure it
really answered the prompt, but the intent was there! Bleh. Will have
to try again some other time and see if I can write more.

John stared at the opposite wall, eyes narrowed and wary, trying to
figure out just what the apparition was supposed to mean. It's true
the crazy witch lady had told him the plant had hallucinogenic
properties, but this was pushing it. He didn't think he was supposed
to be seeing the dead.
Of course, knowing his luck, here he was, back in his quarters in
Atlantis looking at his mother's apparition walking around his room,
looking at his posters and nodding her head at the various books
displayed on his shelf.
She paused by the Steinbeck's books and turned towards him, looking at
him with soulless eyes, staring at him, staring through him. He was
surprised his imagination hadn't provided her in technicolor with the
bullet hole in her head bleeding away freely.
He clenched his fist, trying to forget that day, forget the fact it'd
been his fault because he'd left her alone with his gun by the table
and had forgotten to take out the clips. His fault he hadn't been more
careful and asked one of the nurses to watch over her while he ran to
the payphone to talk to his father, tell him to come in, to come see her.
He'd been halfway down the hall when the shot rang out and by the time
he'd raced back to the room, she was slumped over, bleeding, broken,
and dead.
But maybe, just maybe, now that he sat on his bed, staring at her, the
possibility that she had consciously and sanely made the decision to
pick up his gun tickled his mind. Maybe the act of shooting herself
hadn't been induced by the schizophrenia or the medication, but by her
own need to escape her hell hole and finally find some decency.
