Just tell me why…
Jack O'Neill stared out the window and across the span of ocean as the sun began to set. The question played itself in his mind over and over. It was a question that Jack had many, many answers for. Of course, it was a matter of which answer he could give without facing a firing squad.
Just tell me why…
He looked back over his shoulder at the sleeping forms that covered the two beds in this room. One bed held one man with short brown hair who lay on his stomach, arm stretched across the empty place where Jack had been lying earlier. The second bed held one man with dark, almost black hair and another with light brown hair, both of them still soundly asleep, the dark haired man holding on tightly to the brown haired one. A small smile played at Jack's mouth as he looked at them all then turned back towards the window once more.
Just tell me why…
It hadn't been easy; that much was for sure. It hadn't even been his first choice upon his arrival. His first choice had been to just pack up and leave but she had made that first choice impossible. His second choice had been to settle onto the mainland and not bother with the rest of the expedition. That had actually worked… for all of three weeks. Then the Wraith had returned, more powerful than before, and she had demanded that they return to base and help with the fight. Jack had almost told her no, but cooler heads had prevailed and so back to the base they all went. Jack had a rule then: everyone goes or no one goes. They had all agreed to it.
But they hadn't all agreed on this.
Just tell me why…
When Daniel had asked him that question, Jack had held Daniel's face between his hands and kissed him gently. Those blue eyes said so much and Jack knew it wouldn't be answer enough.
"Just tell me why, Jack."
"Because this is what has to be in order for all of us to be safe."
"Because you still love him?"
"No, Space Monkey. Because I love you…"
That had seemed to calm Daniel for the most part even though it later lead to the argument of why this and why now and why not some other way and Jack had told him that it was the only way to keep them all safe and Daniel had known that Jack wasn't just talking about himself and Daniel; he was talking about John and Rodney, too.
Just tell me why…
By the time John asked the question, Jack no longer had a simple answer ready. Instead, he pulled John into the room with him and proceeded to show him why. John didn't need any more answers after that. He simply gave Jack what he needed to do what had to be done. Later, when Rodney went to John, Jack knew that John would give Rodney all the answers he'd ever need.
Just tell me why…
It had been dark, the power had gone out and Rodney and his group had been on the South Pier working to restore power. John had been on the mainland helping Teyla and her people do some rebuilding after the last Wraith attack. Daniel had gone with Rodney and Jack knew, in the back of his mind, that fate had planned it all out. Fate had given him his answer, his choice, and it was time to do what was needed.
He had found her in her quarters, barely awake when he entered using his ATA gene to unlock her door and access her room. She had opened her eyes and sat up quickly, noting the zat gun in his hand. She told him that he could walk away and she'd never say a word about any of this. She told him that she'd never sent the report to the SGC and that she was fairly certain no one would ever believe her if she did. He stood there and let her talk, let her get it all out of her system, but he never spoke.
"Just tell me why," she asked softly. Ah. That was the question he could answer.
"Because you threatened the lives and the well-being of my family," he answered solemnly. "I've tortured people for less." And he had, but no one in the SGC knew and certainly Daniel or John had never suspected. When she moved to stand, he fired the zat and watched her fall to the floor. He stepped closer and fired the second shot, killing her instantly. After a moment, he knelt next to her body, and pushed a lock of hair from her face.
"Only the knowledge that what you did was done out of a sense of loyalty rather than out of hatred is the only reason I let you die quickly," he whispered just before firing the third shot that would disintegrate her body and leave no clues behind as to what had happened or where she had gone.
Just tell me why…
The email notification chimed and Jack looked away from the window and over towards his laptop. He walked over and sat down in the chair, pulling up his email. He opened the newest one first and then printed it out, saving the file on his hard drive before shutting down the computer. He turned back towards the beds to find three pairs of eyes on him. He held up the sheet of paper and walked over to them.
"Looks like life is about to get easier for us all." He handed them the paper as Daniel moved from his bed onto John and Rodney's.
Rodney, having been named the new civilian leader for Atlantis, looked over the paper first then handed it over to John so he and Daniel could read it as well. He then turned his gaze to Jack.
"Too bad Elizabeth left before all this came about. She wouldn't have had to leave." Jack nodded slowly but something in Rodney's eyes told him that Rodney knew the truth. Jack turned his gaze to John and Daniel. They both read the letter then handed it back to Jack.
"Guess we'd better start scouting the city for more family suites, huh?" John asked quietly, Jack nodded and slid a hand through Daniel's hair.
"For today, though, what say we just make the announcement and go from there?" They three men all nodded in agreement and then they all made about getting up and dressed and ready for the day. Jack looked at the paper in his hand one more time then dropped it onto the desk next to his zat.
The paper simply read, "United States government repeals DADT for all off world colonies beginning immediately."
Just tell me why…
Jack had the answer now, and it was an answer that no one would ever have to hear…
