John ran his hand down Rodney’s side, fingers skimming over pale flesh--shrouded in moonlight as silhouette’s danced around the room. Outside waves rushed against Atlantis’s piers, marines and scientists working the late shift moved and spoke and the sound echoed through the air.

John leaned down and rained kisses along Rodney’s chest, pausing to lap at erect nipples, scraping his teeth lightly over the tiny beads, nipping and soothing gently as he felt Rodney’s breath catch in his chest and strong hands fluttering over his back as Rodney sought some kind of purchase.

Rodney arched his back and John felt the heat of hard cock pressing against his thigh, he felt the slight tremble that travelled through Rodney’s body under his ministrations. John shifted, pressing Rodney back down onto the bed, aligning their hard cocks and slowly moving until they were rubbing together.

Rodney gripped at John’s shoulder and pulled him closer and John went willingly. They moved together over and over until John cried out and they both spilt their seed between them. Then John buried his head into the side of Rodney’s now damp neck, inhaling the scent of his lover, holding him close as he heard it…

Silence.

It seemed funny that that was the loudest sound of all.

Three weeks ago John would have laughed aloud at that thought, but now, now it wasn’t so funny. Now Rodney was silent. There was no more hyper-babble, no more vibrant arguments and condescending statements. No more private, gasped words of passion or uncomfortable, stumbling words of love. Now all that was left were the looks--exasperation, desperation and sadness--and the bleeding silence. Because Rodney no longer spoke to anyone, a strange contagion had caused his vocal cords to shatter and no-one knew how to fix it. Carson and his team were working night and day to come up with something…but until then there was just silence bleeding into everything.

Three weeks ago, John would have said that Rodney’s words were his weapon, having the ability to cut deep to the bone and the tone that could shatter confidence in mere seconds. To be honest, John never used to hear Rodney half the time, he just gave an amused smile and then let his lovers biting words fade into white noise. But now that had all changed.

Because now John realised--it's never the words that hurt or the actions that damage; sometimes, all it takes is silence to break a person.

John moved his head closer into Rodney, tightening his arms and closing his eyes as tears leaked down his cheeks and silence bled around them.

He would give anything to hear the words tumble from those crooked lips, happy, angry, hell--even hurtful ones, he would give it all to not just see the words being silently screamed from blue eyes.

As Rodney released a breath that should have been a sigh, John vowed to listen more carefully and waited for the deafening silence to stop.
