"The night is cold," says Teyla. "Why are you here?"
Elizabeth feels Teyla's presence prickling against her skin. She turns her head aside and glances down. Her gaze focuses on her pale hand against Atlantis' balcony. Teyla's hand covers hers. "I can't seem to stay away."
"This planet's moons are very beautiful." Teyla's voice is soft. "They draw you out when you are not supposed to be here."
"It's not the moons that bring me out tonight." Elizabeth watches their hands as the silence drags on.
"Look at me, Elizabeth." Teyla is firmer now, and Elizabeth can't help but move. Her gaze is drawn up, over Teyla's rounded stomach, then further, until she sees the soft, sad smile that Tyela gives her. "You should not be here, but I cannot find it in my heart to send you away."
"I miss you," says Elizabeth, and it's only years of iron control that keep her voice from breaking.
"My comfort is that you are safe," says Teyla. Everything that Teyla doesn't say - I love you. I need you. We need you. - Elizabeth can read in her eyes.
"But lonely." A wry smile twists Elizabeth's mouth. "This isn't all it's cracked up to be."
"Then let me ease your loneliness once more," says Teyla. Elizabeth lifts her free hand from the balcony rail and brushes the backs of her fingers against Teyla's cheek. "For as long as we have."
Elizabeth glances at the sky, then looks back at Teyla, who is silent and expectant. She nods once. "All right," she says. Her skin becomes luminous. The white glow suffuses the air around her, and with a thought, Teyla is caught up with her. They share every thought and feeling with each other.
When Elizabeth feels the attention of the others turning toward her, she holds onto Teyla a bare moment longer. It's never enough time. She gently slips away, her almost physical form dissolving into brilliant light as she floats up into the sky.
Teyla doesn't see her, but Elizabeth stays nearby. She watches faint tears slip down Teyla's face as she stares up at the night sky.
