Author's Notes/Summary: Well, this is a first. I’ve never wrote slash before or anything above a PG-13 rating. I am a multi-shipper of Lorne however, and this is a pairing I really like. So I’ve given it my best effort and I hope you like it.
"Okay. This is it,” Rodney said while holding out the scanner and taking readings while pointing it at a large tomb like building in front of him. It was overgrown and slightly corroded, but for ten thousand years old it was looking pretty good.
“That’s it?” Sheppard asked with a tone of exaggerated disappointment present in his voice. Sometimes he did it to wind Rodney up. Other times he did it because sometimes he really did expect a bit more from these ancient guys. If this tomb was meant to hold some sort of new way of creating energy, like Rodney had said, then it was hardly presenting many promises from just looking at the outside.
Rodney, however, ignored him. He was already busying himself with setting up his equipment and looking for a way to get into the building. He had assured everyone that it was completely safe structurally. The only information they got from the translations was what Rodney had labelled ‘a load of hippy mumbo jumbo’ and basically gave out a similar message as ‘love thy neighbour’, although, as it was the ancients, they had phrased it a little bit more poetically, but the team had got the general idea. Anyway, it didn’t relate to the possibility of the new energy source Rodney hoped to find, so he had decided that the text was long since relevant.
“Okay kids,” Sheppard began, “Myself, Teyla and Ronon will head out around the surrounding area, try to make contact with any locals…Maybe see if there is anymore of this ancient tech stuff lying around,” he nodded unconvincingly at the tomb structure and then turned to look at Major Lorne, who was standing off to the left of the rest of them, waiting for orders, perhaps knowing what was coming.
“Lorne, you’re with McKay,” Sheppard said in a sing song voice as a smirk crossed his face.
“Gee, thanks sir,” Lorne said in his trademark deadpan expression. He knew there was a reason like this that he was brought along, other than that his team had been the first ones to explore this area, so he knew the landscape. Yeah, this was going to be real fun.
“Ahh,” Rodney said with a small spark in his voice, oblivious to the conversation going on behind him. Everyone turned to look at him and waited, “I’ve reprogrammed the crystals and should be able to now deactivate the shield and then open the safety doors.”
“Shields and safety doors are usually there for a reason you know,” Lorne said.
“Yes, yes I know. I’ve done the checks. Everything is fine. It was probably just a way to keep out unwelcome enemies like, I don’t know, maybe the wraith,” said Rodney impatiently.
“Okay,” Sheppard said, “Go ahead. Open it already.”
Rodney hesitated, “Well, I would prefer some back up. I mean, who knows what might be in there. I’m not very good with things jumping out from behind doors at me…Especially life sucking alien things that result in certain death.”
Lorne smirked and raised his P-90 before stepping forward to stand in line with both Rodney and Sheppard.
“Thank you. Opening the door, now,” Rodney reinserted the last crystal and after a second or two, the shield dropped and what appeared to have been a stone covering had vanished, leaving a wide entrance into what looked to be a main chamber.
Rodney turned his head to look at Lorne, who looked at Sheppard before walking into the chamber. He had to go several metres in before coming to what appeared to be the main control room or lab. The consoles powered up instantly, lighting up the previous dark space, although definitely not to full power.
Rodney looked down at the life signs detector in his hand and noticed nothing, which didn’t surprise him, but he liked to be careful these days.
“The energy readings I’m picking up are all over the place. Hopefully there should be some data stored on these systems, although we all know how reliable the ancients were. I wouldn’t be surprised if I have to start from scratch so this could take some time.”
“Okay,” John said cheerfully, “Have fun,” He nodded to the Major on the way out and smirked again. Lorne smiled sarcastically.
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------
Rodney got started straight away, plugging in his tablet and occasionally talking to himself or the systems. The readings were constant, but with so many variables it was hard to find a starting point.
“So, how long do you think this will take?” Lorne said while shining his p-90 all around the room in curiosity.
“As long as it takes. I haven’t seen anything like this before. This is suggesting a high output level of some form of energy that is very similar to the pattern created by Earth radio waves. There’s no main source though. I’m reading over…well, lots of different variables.”
“What does that mean?”
“I don’t know,” Rodney said impatiently, “Look, don’t you have something you could be doing, like keeping watch at the entrance?”
“After our first mission here we have no reason to believe this planet had hostiles.”
“Well excuse me for being a little more cautious than your trigger happy team of marines.”
Lorne ignored the snark. He knew what to expect from McKay and it no longer bothered him. Actually, he found it to be quite amusing and it was times like this that he really found himself valuing his sense of humour. Even so, he decided to keep things easy and head back to the entrance.
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------
Lorne had only been outside for ten minutes when his radio went.
“Major, are you still at the entrance?”
“Yes, McKay. I’m busy making myself useful,” he said dryly.
“Well, I need you back in here. I’m picking up some energy readings. It seems some secondary systems have just come online.”
“Oookay,” Lorne said before heading back inside. He wasn’t quite sure what help he could possibly be, but he wasn’t about to argue about it.
He had only stepped a few paces inside when the familiar sound of a shield raising made him turn back around, “Erm, McKay, the shield just came back alone.”
“Yes, I know. It must be some sort of fail safe feature built into the secondary systems.”
“Well?” Lorne asked, “Can you get it open again?”
There was several moments silence on the radio before Rodney responded, “No.”
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------
Lorne made his way back to the main control room and headed over to Rodney, who was tapping away on his tablet and darting himself between controls.
“So, what have we got?”
Rodney sighed, “Well, we again have proof that the ancients were given more credit for intelligence than they deserve,” he held out the tablet to the Major, “These are a list of protocols. Some of them I’ve been able to work out, others of them are for systems I don’t even recognise. Based on the information I have, I’ll say that this is some sort of research lab. The really fun part is that once again the only legacy our ancient friends have left behind is that they were rushed and desperate.”
Lorne looked blank for a moment, “Do you know what the original purpose of it was.”
“No, not exactly, but from earliest records it looks like some sort of lab for research into improving their own existence…Maybe enhancing their way of life. I guess that is where the text on the entrance came from. Still, that’s all unimportant now. The protocols are all mixed up. It seems that this was used as a base for scientific research during the war with the wraith. Everything is one big mess and everything has just become one big mess. And to top it all off, I have no idea what prolonged exposure to this type of energy could do.”
Lorne stared at Rodney for a moment and then frowned. He was a smart man, but he was quite good at tuning out the bits that weren’t really necessary for his knowledge. What he did gather though was that something had gone wrong that Rodney couldn’t explain and now it also seemed the chamber wasn’t quite as safe as he was reassured it was. Wonderful.
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------
Lorne walked back across the chamber several minutes later after going back to the entrance. Everything was definitely shielded shut tight.
“Well, I’m getting nothing except static on the radio. Either we’re out of range or the shield stops the radio from transmitting,” Rodney didn’t look up from his work, “I couldn’t activate the panel either. I guess that’s another thing built into these protocols,” still nothing, “I did try to shoot at the control panel, but it didn’t do a lot of good other than create a decent size hole-“
“You did what?” Rodney said loudly, looking concerned.
“I didn’t do anything. I was just waiting for you to start paying attention to what I was saying.”
“Oh, I’m so sorry if my working to get us out of here happens to coincide with your need to tell me every obvious little thing,” Rodney said sarcastically before returning his attention back to his work.
“I’m just saying, it seems like I’m the only one trying anything that might actually work,” Lorne argued calmly, although his usual patience was starting to fail.
“No offence, but I don’t think you fully understand what is going on and the best thing you can do to help is to shut up and let me get on with my work, which at the moment is proving difficult and unlikely to have any success,” Rodney looked up and they stared at each other for a few moments and then Lorne frowned and broke eye contact.
“Oh, well that’s just great isn’t it? I tell you what, you just let me know when you’re ready to start accepting my help and advice on how to get us out,” Lorne said snarkily, before turning to walk away.
“Lorne!” Rodney shouted. “Lorne! Where are you going now?”
“To the entrance. Gonna try and get another message to the Colonel. Might try and get some rest and ease this headache that I’ve had since coming in here.”
Rodney watched him walk away, lost for words. He’d never seen Lorne lose it before, even a little bit. It unsettled him, more than he’d like to admit. The job in hand had to be done though, and so he got on with it, even if he was also aware of a dull ache across his head also.
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------
An hour had passed and Rodney had barely worked his way through half of the information the data pad was giving to him. Plus, the dull headache had now become much more intense and it was becoming much harder to concentrate. He was also aware of a feeling of tension. Rodney had always been affected by the mood of rooms, and there was a definite tension here. Either that or he was becoming paranoid about being alone. He tried not to think about it too much.
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------
Rodney wasn’t even aware that Lorne had come back into the main chamber, and when a warm pair of hands wrapped around his waist and made their way slowly to the hem of his pants, he almost dropped the data pad from the start. For a moment Rodney just stood still, shocked about what the hell was going on.
“What do you think you are doing?” he said loudly.
“Trying to keep you warm,” the Major responded, while nuzzling at Rodney’s neck.
Rodney pulled away, uncomfortable with this sudden close contact, “It’s not even cold in here.”
Lorne didn’t seem to be put off that easily. He slipped off his tac vest and jacket and let them drop to the floor. The look in his eyes was possessive and controlled. His expression was focussed and his eyes were full of obvious longing and lust as he walked closer to Rodney.
“What has gotten into you?” Rodney exclaimed.
“Don’t you feel it McKay? It’s this place. Something in here…Something that you probably broke-“
“-Oh, so we’re back to insults now are we? Well, that’s just great. Thank you very much. So, it’s all Rodney’s fault?” he began to rant, as he was being slowly backed against one of the ancient consoles near the wall, “I’d like to see you get out of this Professor Hotshot. I’d like to see you try and break down the code of over 100 different ten thousand year old protocols.”
Rodney stopped jabbering as he hit the edge of the console. He had no where to go, but he didn’t try to pull away either. Something held him there, as he felt the warmth of the Major invading his personal space. The thudding of his headache had become more extreme over the last while, but something else didn’t feel right. He was sensing it now and feeling the tension was something more than a mere headache.
Lorne locked his eyes on Rodney and stared for several longing moments at the man, before leaning in and taking his lips with his own. It started slow and he waited for Rodney to respond, before flicking his tongue against his lips, impatient for access to Rodney’s mouth. His hands were cupping his head and neck, pulling in Rodney deeper until the kiss became more possessive.
Rodney finally let Lorne into his mouth and moaned softly against the feel of warm tongue on tongue. Lorne smiled through the kiss, “I don’t know what’s going on here,” he said breathlessly, “But whatever it is, it’s probably all your fault,” before he trailed his lips down to Rodney’s throat and giving close attention to his pulse point.
Rodney was ready to argue back but the sweet sensation of Lorne sucking and licking his way down his neck clouded his mind. He took hold of Lorne’s face and pulled him back to his lips before kissing him roughly, “Don’t take all your frustration out on me. I know what you second in commands are like. Never satisfied…Always trying to reach the top…” His words were broken and breathless between kisses.
Lorne bit down hard on Rodney’s lip and moved his hand down his body and squeezed his ass in a death grip that made Rodney moan into his mouth. The frustration was hitting both of them, sexually and emotionally. There was no denying the chemistry that already existed between them. Something was going on here, but it was growing from already formed foundations.
This was more than just a chemistry, however. Lorne wanted Rodney now. It was a matter of need rather than desire. He could taste and smell the same want on Rodney, and he could feel the man’s arousal pressing restricted through the fabric of his pants.
Lorne pulled Rodney around and pushed himself closer to his body, becoming painfully aware of the own cock hard against his pants. With one hand he reached down and quickly unzipped them and pulled them off to the ground, while spreading gentle kisses and nips along Rodney’s now exposed shoulder blade after pulling free his shirt.
His hands began to wander over Rodney’s body, trying to find every point that made the man shiver with anticipation and want. He rocked himself slowly against it, torturing himself at the same time as his hands did for Rodney. Every moan and sigh penetrated deep inside him until his own pleasures where being heard coming deep from inside him.
“Fuck, you’re so hot right now,” Lorne whispered to his ear, “I want to hear you want me. Do you want me McKay?” He let his hands slide down Rodney’s body and rest teasingly on his hips, and squeezing hard to suppress his own need to cave in right now and fuck him hard. Before Rodney even had time to respond himself, Lorne trailed one hand slowly over the front of his pants.
Rodney moaned deep in his throat as Lorne began to caress the solid mass that was pressing restricted against the tightness of his pants.
“Is this what you want?” Lorne spoke barely above a whisper near Rodney’s ear before nipping at it.
“Fuck, yes,” Rodney sighed, “Now. I want you now.”
“Is that an order?” He said huskily as he removed both their boxers in two quick sweeps.
“That’s an order.”
The rest of his words were lost as Lorne inserted a long finger into Rodney’s ass, and then another. In an ideal world both would have taken their time, but this was not an ideal world or ideal situation. Both men were consumed with the want for each other. This was about survival and instinct.
When Rodney started to rock back against Lorne’s fingers, he removed and in one swift stroke, pushed in his cock.
His whole body shuddered at the warmth spread tightly around him and he remained still for a few moments.
“Are you okay?” Rodney said.
“Yeah. Yeah. Just can’t imagine any other time feeling as intense as this. This may be quick.”
He slid himself out a bit before thrusting back in. It took a few moments to get a steady rhythm with one another, but soon both where speaking each others names in moans of pleasure, combined with the slapping of skin on skin as they moved faster.
Lorne could feel himself building to a high and he knew he was going to finish too soon. With one hand he took Rodney firmly and started to rub up and down his cock.
Rodney let his head fall back against Lorne’s sweaty body and felt himself reaching the brink. Why did this feel so good? Why now? His mind was overcome with the sensations and colours were actually crossing the vision of his half lidded eyes.
“So close. Harder. Faster,” the words escaped his lips broken and stammered, but Lorne complied, pushing himself deep into his body and rubbing his hand faster and stroking across the tip of Rodney’s cock.
“Fuck, yes.”
Lorne came hard, pushing his body as close to Rodney as he could get. It wasn’t long before Rodney was flowing over his hand, collapsing back against him and the console behind them, breathing heavily.
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------
Lorne continued to apply kisses along Rodney’s shoulder and neck as they both took time to recover. His hands rested softly on Rodney’s waist, gently caressing with his thumbs. He had always been one for attention to detail, and sex was no different. He took time and enjoyment from every moment of it, especially when it had been good sex, and now that the tension in his head had faded, he found he was relaxing into the comfort of what had just happened.
“You okay McKay?”
“Mmm,” Rodney replied contentedly. His headache was starting to numb away as well, although whether he would notice it anyway was a valid point. The tension was also gone. The continuous need to fight had disappeared with it.
After a few minutes, they dressed in silence. Rodney turned back to the console and his instruments and began to focus again on the task in hand. Neither mentioned anything about the headaches, which was neither a good or bad thing. At the moment it was probably good, because it meant not denying what had happened. Lorne knew Rodney well enough though. He was the type of guy to run from things like this, even if it was just sex.
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------
“Major Lorne, this is Sheppard, come in,” the transmission was crackled and broken, but Lorne didn’t hesitate in grabbing the radio.
“Sir, this is Lorne.”
“What the hell has happened in there? We’ve been trying to establish contact for 3 hours.”
Lorne and Rodney exchanged a glance, “Problem’s with the ancient tech,” Rodney grabbed the radio off of Lorne before he could finish reporting back.
“Sheppard, this is McKay. Don’t ask questions, just do. We’re coming to the entrance now. I need you to pull out the top row of crystals from the controls.”
Silence for a moment.
“Okay, all done. What now?”
“Move the middle row of crystals into the top and then place the other row into the top.”
Lorne stared at Rodney again, “What is that meant to achieve.”
“The radio is getting through now because one of the secondary systems has shut down again. We can’t open it from the inside, but by resetting the outside crystals it should, in theory, open the door. It’s another fail safe…In case the fail safes, well you know.”
They waited a few seconds, and then heard the shield deactivate before the daylight flooded through into the entrance.
“Thought you’d never come for us, Sir.”
“Oh well, you know us, we like to take things slow. Helps build up the tension and suspense.”
Rodney stared at Sheppard for a moment and then to Lorne, who just shrugged.
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------
The briefing back on Atlantis was…interesting. Details were left out here and there, but it didn’t matter because a decision was made that there was nothing worth persuing further especially when it was a risk to people.
It wasn’t until after they had been dismissed from the briefing that Rodney caught up with Lorne down the corridor.
“It was the energy readings.”
“What?”
“The reason for the headaches, the tension, the…”
“Damn good sex?” Lorne grinned.
“The readings I described like a radio wave. They were at a level that was messing with our heads and effecting parts of the brain that we usually have more control over; Basic animal instincts and such things.”
“So why did it lock us in there?”
“I don’t know. Look, there are a lot of things I don’t understand about the ancients. They weren’t really the brightest bunch. There were so many mixed up experiments in that room that it’s hard to tell what did what.” Rodney frowned and then looked at Lorne who only smiled.
“Well, no point in denying it…The ancients had a kinky side,” Lorne joked, but Rodney didn’t reply. Lorne placed a hand on his shoulder, “Look, I don’t care what this means to you. I can move on and be happy, but if you want to talk about this...Well, you know where I am” And he left to walk down the opposite corridor to his quarters, leaving Rodney to his own thoughts.
