Cameron was in the kitchen fixing snack when the doorbell rang. He checked his watch noting that Trick-or-treating wouldn’t start for another twenty minutes so he figured it must be one of Joey’s friends. The thirteen year old was in the basement setting up a haunted house with a few other friends and invited a few other friends. They were going to let the trick-or-treaters go through the haunted house if they wanted.

The kitchen door opened and three year old Tracy walked in wearing a little Air Force uniform. For the past few weeks she had said she wanted to be a General in the Air Force for Halloween just like her uncle Jack. Cam did his best not to be disappointed she didn’t want to be a colonel like him.

“Hey kiddo, ready to go trick-or-treating?” Cam asked.

“Uh-huh,” she nodded her head vigorously.

Daniel walked in next followed by a couple of Joey’s friends. Cam directed them to the basement.

“Are you sure you’re going to be okay with all this alone?” Daniel asked.

Cam gave his lover a dismissive wave. “I’ll be fine. Are you sure you want to take a three year old trick-or-treating alone?”

“I think I can handle it,” Daniel rolled his eyes.

“Is it time?” Tracy asked tugging on Daniel’s pant leg.

“Yes,” Daniel said. “I suppose we better get going. Do you have your bucket?”

Tracy had an orange bucket in the shape of a jack-O-lantern. “Yep,” Tracy retrieved it from the kitchen table.

“Have fun,” Cameron leaned down and gave Tracy a kiss on the cheek. Standing up straight he did the same to Daniel.

The sun was starting to go down and it would be about an hour before it was completely gone from the sky. Daniel held Tracy’s hand firmly in his making sure they would not get separated.

He laughed a couple of times as Tracy’s hat or cover, as was the proper term, slipped over her eyes. Jack and Cameron had taken the kids shopping for costumes a week earlier.

Daniel was still amazed they were able to find a little Air Force costume for Tracy. When he saw what Jack had bought for the twins Daniel told him it was nice knowing him. Sam was not going to be pleased. He got them Bart and Homer Simpson costumes.

Since Jack and Sam lived in a different neighborhood than Daniel and Cam they probably wouldn’t be seeing them tonight. Jack and Sam weren’t going to have the twins out for trick-or-treating the full two hours either. The two families were getting together the next day for lunch though.

Tracy stood in front of a door after Daniel rang the doorbell and stepped back a few feet. It was their ninth house on the block. So far Tracy had amassed a good chunk of goodies. There had been one house where an older single man who generally kept to himself lived. He had said little to Tracy before dropping a quarter into her bucket and saying goodnight.

The door opened and Daniel winced. Their neighbor Carol Stewart who was a mother of teenagers thirteen and sixteen (the younger a friend of Joey’s) stood at the door wearing a witch’s costume. Her face was painted green with warts and a big pointy nose.

Tracy let out an earsplitting scream and ran back to Daniel clutching his leg. Daniel reached down and extracted the little girl from his leg pulling her up into his arms.

“Oh dear, Daniel. I am so sorry,” Carol said.

Daniel removed Tracy’s hat from her head as she buried her face in his shoulder. Her arms were wrapped tight around his neck and the bucket of goodies was pressed against his chest as she had an arm through the handle.

“It’s all right, Carol,” he assured her.

“Here,” Carol dropped a handful of candy into Tracy’s bucket.

“I’ll bring her over tomorrow and show her it’s all right. You’re still Mrs. Stewart,” Daniel said.

They agreed upon a time and Daniel carried Tracy back away from the house. “Are you ready to go home?” He asked her.

“Uh-huh,” her voice was muffled in his shoulder and he could feel her nod.

He walked back to the house with Tracy in his arms. It wasn’t often he or Cameron would carry Tracy very far anymore. She was getting a bit heavy for this and his back didn’t take too kindly to such a strain as it use to.

They made into the house and Daniel set Tracy down on the floor. Cameron was just coming out of the kitchen and Tracy saw him. She dropped her bucket and ran up to him clutching at his leg.

“Hey, what’s going on?” Cameron removed Tracy from his leg and pulled her up in his arms.

“There’s a witch living in Mrs. Stewart’s house,” Tracy said.

Cameron looked at Daniel having an idea of what was really going on.

“Mrs. Stewart was dressed up like a witch,” Daniel explained.

“Ah,” Cam responded.

“I told her I would bring Tracy over tomorrow so she could see everything was all right,” Daniel said.

Cam nodded. “Well, how about we go see what you got in your bucket.”

“Okay,” Tracy’s voice was quiet.

Cam carried her into the kitchen and set her down in a chair at the table. Daniel followed behind carrying the bucket of candy. They dumped the candy onto the table and Daniel and Cameron checked it all to make sure everything was properly sealed.

They only went to neighbors they were familiar with so there was not much concern for anything harmful. Mr. Grubber, who gave Tracy a quarter, was the only neighbor they didn’t know very well.

“A quarter?” Cam looked at Daniel.

Daniel shrugged. “Mr. Grubber.” Cam just nodded.

“All right Tracy,” Cam said, “you can have two pieces of candy and we’ll save the rest.”

Tracy picked out two after careful consideration. She seemed to be calming down now that she was home.

The doorbell rang and Daniel checked his watch. It was another twenty minutes before trick-or-treating would be over. He got up and left the kitchen to answer the door. A minute later two kids around the ages of seven or eight and a mother they were vaguely acquainted with entered the kitchen. They wanted to go down to the haunted house. Pointing the way Daniel then sat back down.

“Can I go down to the basement?” Tracy asked.

Cam and Daniel shared a look. “Um I don’t think that’s such a good idea,” Cam replied.

“Why not?” Tracy asked.

“Um well,” Cam hesitated looking for some help from Daniel.

“I really don’t think you’d like it,” Daniel added. He inwardly grimaced knowing that was a lame answer. An idea came to him, redirection. “Hey what would you say to watching the Little Mermaid? We’ll even pop some popcorn.”

It turned out to be the magic words and Tracy bounced out of her seat.

“First we want you to get ready for bed,” Cam added.

“Aw,” Tracy started to whine but stopped abruptly with the looks on Daniel’s and Cam’s faces. “Okay,” she agreed.

By the time Tracy was in her pajamas trick-or-treating was over and most of Joey’s friends had gone home. One of them stayed to watch a movie in Joey’s room.

Tracy climbed onto the couch between Daniel and Cameron. Cam held the bowl of popcorn in his hands so Tracy handed her hairbrush over to Daniel who took it and proceeded to brush Tracy’s damp hair while they sat back and watch the Little Mermaid.

Daniel and Cameron entered their bedroom later that night. Tracy was in bed and Joey’s friend had just left.

Daniel came out of the bathroom last and shuffled over to the bed. Sitting down he looked over at Cam and snorted. Reaching over he lifted the piece of paper from Cam’s chest. “Trick-or-treat?”

“Yep, which do you want?” Cam grinned.

“Well,” Daniel leaned over pressing his lips to Cam’s. He moved over to straddle Cam.

“Treat then?” Cam asked pulling his hand out from under his pillow revealing a handful of Hershey’s Kisses.

“How much candy was left?” Daniel asked plucking Kiss from Cam’s hand.

“A lot,” Cam said.

Daniel leaned down to kiss Cam as the chocolate dissolved in his mouth. But a knock on the door interrupted them.

Daniel moved off the bed towards the door while Cam put away the candy. Daniel opened the door revealing a frightened Tracy.

“Hey, couldn’t sleep?” Daniel kneeled down in front of her.

“Nuh-uh,” she shook her head. “The witch is in my closet. Can I sleep with you?”

Daniel looked back at Cam. A silent agreement past between them and Daniel let Tracy in. “Come on up here,” he pulled her up to the bed. “Just for tonight.”

Tracy crawled over onto the bed to find a comfortable spot. Another knock on the door interrupted them. Tracy squealed pressing against Daniel’s side. “The witch!”

Cameron yelled at the door. “Joey?”

The door opened and Joey peered in hesitating at the threshold.

“Is there a problem?” Cam asked.

“Um,” Joey looked around nervous or uncomfortable; the adults were not sure.

“Joey,” Daniel encouraged. “Would you like to come in?”

“Okay,” Joey said coming in and sitting on the edge of the bed.

“So what’d you watch?” Cam asked.

“Saw I,” Joey said.

“Right,” Cam’s voice was resigned. No fun for him and Daniel tonight. “Where’d you get that movie?”

“Steve’s older brother rented it,” Joey said of his friend with whom he watched it.

It took a lot of maneuvering and a few kicks to various areas on both men from little feet but somehow they all managed to find a comfortable spot.

“Are you sure the witch won’t get us in here?” Tracy asked when the lights were out.

Daniel opened his mouth to say something when they heard the bedroom door creaking. Tracy squeaked clutching onto Daniel’s t-shirt.

“Ew!” Cam exclaimed. “Sam, you are not getting on this bed.”

They heard the dog make grunting sound before they heard a thump on the floor where Sam had settled down.

A few minutes later Cam carefully leaned over pressing a kiss to Daniel’s lips.

“Those better not have been dog kissed lips,” Daniel said before they slipped into sleep.
