Ficlet request: With All Due Respect (G)

Jan 06, 2008 11:15

Because George Hammond rocks, today will cover both Hammond prompts. This one is for abyssinia4077, who wanted Daniel and Hammond while Daniel was still trying to retrieve his memories after "Fallen." Moonshayde's will go up later today.

Word count: ~660. My brain has apparently not yet wrapped itself around the concept of snippet, but I'll keep trying... :)

Aw!

I love Daniel's feeling out where he belongs and how he feels about the team (and YES on the awkwardness with Jack in those episodes because, just, YES) and how the SGC feels so stark and cold and off and YAY HAMMOND!

Oh, yeah. Jack seemed to want to slip back into joking and their scarily unique shorthand, and poor Daniel just kept coming up short.

But SAM! And HAMMOND! :) :)

Glad you liked it!

Yes and yes and YES. And that is why Random's Numerology is on my list of Five Fics That I Will Take With Me If I Can Only Have Five For Some Reason. Because Jack had a year to deal without Daniel, and want to get Daniel back, and then - WHAM! Not!quite!Daniel, and I do think that Daniel never really went back to what he was (and that Jack suffered similarly from his two downloads). And the bit in the briefing always makes me cringe a little, because that's Jack in full steam mode and Daniel just stares at him, utterly at a loss as to how he should respond.

I love 'em all. And Hammond. Who rocks. :)

I still haven't watched most of S6, but that seems to be the consensus from what I have seen and read and meta-absorbed.

I don't know if it's so much different motivations as different characterization entirely. I do agree that Daniel spent the last bit of S4 and most of S5 struggling to find purpose when the SGC was moving away from what he believed it to be - and that's why Menace so utterly crushed him, because he tried and tried and tried to do it the way he believed was right and he failed. But when he came back - it's not that I don't want him confidence and at peace. But in the later seasons, I find myself chasing after glimpses of Daniel and getting all excited at those little bits, rather than sitting back and enjoying the character ep by ep.

So Daniel didn't really need Jack to be so... Jack-like. Good think he waited for that "click." :)

Well, it depends on how much characterization is built on what drives a character, I suppose. That motivation will affect how he acts and how he interacts with those around him and sees the world.

I agree sometimes he felt really different, and yet at the same time I could almost always trace and understand how those differences came to be (for which I have to give kudos to Michael Shanks and the writers/directors/producers for letting the character change).

Plus there's the question of, after 5(?) deaths, 2 ascensions, personality downloads, Prior-izing, Goa'uld hand-devicing, mind wipes, etc how much of Daniel is still Daniel (since the brain is a bunch of chemical and electrical processes and impulses and any and all of those could disrupt and change those impulses....)

It was never a question of thinking his evolution to be unrealistic; it's more a sad regret that the writers took his storyline in that direction, so that I'm chasing after the Daniel that was instead of really liking the Daniel that is. Some of that, of course, might be the company he's keeping... ;)

Oh dear me yes. That he's even vaguely still Daniel-like is a testament to his strength of mind.
