Six years of active SG-1 fandom. No plans to go anywhere. :)
In fandom
Still very grateful to
sg1_debrief, the best LJ resource for SG-1 fandom. If you're not watching the comm, start watching now! And if you're making contributions to the fandom, in any shape or genre or flavor, make sure you're getting tagged by e-mailing sg1_debrief at gmail.com with the complete URL of your LJ (
http://yourljname.livejournal.com). I'm proud to be even a small part of it -- although if I had more gen fic to tag, it would be even better. ;)
redial_the_gate is, incredibly, five years old by now. It's been a long, fun ride, going through the entire series one week at a time! We're finishing up S10 now, then it's Ark of Truth and Continuum and... whew. It's going to be hard to say goodbye to that comm. I'm grateful to my fellow mods, Aby and Aurora and Pepper, as well as the wonderful people who help make the comm so inclusive and giving.
There was only one
SG-1 Gen Fic Day with Crossover
Alphabet Soup this year, but that's because I got pretty distracted by modding
sg1friendathon, happily with enthusiastic support from Suzannemarie. If you haven't yet browsed the wonderful gen fic that came out of the Friendathon, there's a
Master List for the regular ficathon submissions, as well as an index for the shorter stories of the
Ficathon Frenzy. As for future Gen Fic Days and Alphabet Soups, we've got a new SG-1 Gen Fic Day scheduled for the end of January, with Cam Alphabet Soup already simmering on the backburner.
I would still like to see
gate_women get more love, whether the gen flavor or otherwise. No, I'm not a mod there -- just an enthusiastic participant who would like to see more fic and fanworks about the many wonderful ladies who grace the Stargate universe. There was a challenge this past calendar year to make 11 posts there over the course of 11 months, and I am proud to say that I succeeded. You can find those entries filtered
at this link (along with some non-challenge entries), but I invite you all to browse the comm in general, and maybe make a post or two of your own.
In meta...? Er. I opened my two WIP
Canon vs. Fanon files, but didn't add more than a paragraph or two. I think my reluctance partially stems from knowing that much of the classic fanon has more or less fallen by the wayside. Janet threatening to jab people with "really big needles" is still around, but you don't often see newer authors picking up the "Danny" nonsense, for example. I want to finish my last off-world entry and do the on-world one (if I can), but it feels like there's little interest -- or even need -- for those posts any longer. We'll see.
In recs
A few less recs this year than last year, but 100 recs in 17 different categories bring the grand total of entries over at
figs_sg1_rec to 750! Now there's a milestone I would have never thought possible. I've continued playing with niche categories that tend to get overlooked, including creating Tok'ra and Replicarter as new categories over at
stargateficrec -- although categories like Team and Daniel still tend to get used an awful lot. ;)
sg1genrecs, my DW baby, isn't as active as I hoped it would be. Still, DW is -- well, it's unfair to call it unfriendly to gen; it's more a case of being a lot more active in non-gen. I still remain optimistic, though, and hope we'll get more recs there.
In fic
Yes, I did plenty of writing, and yes, it was all pretty short again. 21 stories, about 28,450 words. This is much better than last year's total of around 20,000, but still well below my 2007 total of 55,000 words! I must figure out how to start writing long fic again. All gen, natch, and mostly in the PG range.
Team fics
For All Your Beauty Needs. Sam and her boys, on a matriarchal planet that's not as much fun as it ought to be. Teal'c pwnage, Daniel eyelash fluttering, and Sam stalking Jack with a powder puff. No, not crackfic!
Purple Beaches and Green Bikinis. Jack and Teal'c friendship, Wonder Twins, teamy goodness, Hammond awesomeness. Short and (hopefully) sweet.
Five Crossovers That Didn't Happen to SG-1. A fun experiment in crossovers -- what would've happened if the Gate had sent them to somewhen other than 1969?
Friendship fics
Pawns' Promotion. My first non-canon AU story! The NID think Sam and Sha're would make fine experimental subjects. Sam and Sha're have other ideas.
Seeking Definition. Sam reflecting on her friendship with Teal'c.
Canis Major. Teal'c and Daniel friendship, with an unusual native who needs convincing that "Jaffa" does not always equal "evil."
A Study of Cultural Behavior. Another Teal'c and Daniel piece. "Daniel Jackson, this is not the first time we have learned that I possess a greater knowledge of Tau'ri popular culture than you."
Chug When They Reverse the Polarity. Sam and Janet on a rare free day.
Your Regularly Scheduled Programming. Sam and Teal'c get to be the adults while Jack and Daniel indulge in their usual squabble.
Guidance. Early S1 Teal'c considers his friendship with Jack and looks forward to reciprocating, some day.
Character fics
These are all Daniel. This will probably surprise no one.
A Fine and Private Place. Angsty introspection on the nature of conflicting memories and loss.
L is for L-Space. My contribution to Crossover Alphabet Soup, in which Daniel accidentally ends up at the Unseen University in Ankh-Morpork. Ook!
Dial it Up, Daniel. Daniel speculates on the depth of Ancient influence in the human psyche, complete with DHD design.
Drabbles
They really are addictive things, aren't they?
Speaking of SG-1. Seven different entries of 12-13 drabbles apiece, one for each member of the team over the years.
Happiness Redux. Ten happy drabbles. Classic team with Jacob, Jonas, Siler, and Nyan thrown in at no extra charge!
Favorite fic bits
In no particular order, just because it's fun to do this:
Sam stood at Sha're's shoulder, holding the pistol in her right hand. She didn't know what Sha're wanted to say to these men, but she'd back her up anyway.
Sha're leaned forward and fixed the leader with narrowed eyes. "Take a message back to your masters," she hissed, her voice too low to carry to the watching police. "I was raised as a slave and died to help free my people. Then I died again, though my body still walked and breathed. Now I have been reborn a third time to walk this Earth in freedom, and you think I will let you cowards steal my life?"
She spat at the ground at his feet. "Go back to your scrambling with evil tasks in the dark. Do not trouble us again."
She turned her back on them, chin still held high, and walked away.
--
Pawns' Promotion "That will not be necesssary, Captain Carter," Teal'c said unexpectedly. He left his post at the door and paced toward her.
She squinted up at him. "It won't?"
"I can supply you with the cosmetics you require."
"You can?" A slow smile spread across Sam's face, her eyes crinkling.
"You can?" Jack blurted, aghast.
Teal'c raised an eyebrow at him. "As a member of SG-1, I represent the Tau'ri, do I not? It is important to always look one's best. Extra supplies ensure a pleasing appearance."
Daniel, not even bothering to hide his wicked grin, chimed in, "Yeah, Jack. You don't want Teal'c to have to fight a Jaffa horde without his bronzer and eyeshadow, do you?"
"But... but..." Jack sputtered, waving his hands. "Carter doesn't bring makeup off-world! How come Teal'c does?"
Daniel snickered. "Because thousand-pound tigers can sit wherever they want, Jack."
At that, even Sam had to laugh. She stood up and gave Teal'c's arm an affectionate pat. "No one at the SGC would ever argue with Teal'c's choices, sir -- or, at least, they'd never say it aloud." She ran a judicious eye over the various tubes and blushers that Teal'c was now removing from his pack. "Hmm. Yeah, I can work with this. Oh, I didn't know you were trying that Shimmer Cream Eyeshadow that I recommended -- is that Bronze Beauty?"
"It is indeed, Captain Carter. I have found it most pleasing."
Jack was still looking appalled. "My scientist and my Jaffa, bonding over makeup! That is just wrong."
Sam, now untwisting a tube of pale blue, glanced up at him with a sudden glint in her eye. "It occurs to me, sir, that we have an opportunity to increase your inferior male cred..."
"Oh, no." Jack backed away. "No no no no no no."
-- For All Your Beauty Needs They were still expected to take part in officially-sanctioned SGC team building events. So when Hammond mentioned that the Joint Chiefs had arranged for a summer outing to Morse Park for all SGC personnel and their families, Jack had pointed out a certain SG-1 complication: to wit, one Jaffa complete with symbiote pouch. How could Teal'c show up at the beach in swimming trunks, especially when civilian families would be present?
Hammond looked apologetic. He'd already thought of that, apparently, and voiced a quiet objection. The higher-uppers seemed to think that Teal'c wouldn't mind sitting this one out.
Jack rocked back on his heels, put on his best "technically respectful but about to be disrespectful" expression, and wondered aloud how they were supposed to build a team when the team wasn't allowed to be together.
Hammond had put on his best "insubordination might be fun, Colonel, but you can get a lot more accomplished by working within the rules" face. "If you have any suggestions, I'd be glad to hear them," he said with deceptive mildness, and Jack caught the undercurrent of Please find a solution so I can give Teal'c the courtesy he deserves.
So Jack went to his team and asked for input. Teal'c first requested some clarification regarding beach etiquette, and then asked why he couldn't wear a swimsuit that covered his abdomen the way that women do -- "Unless Major Carter plans to wear a bikini," he added with apparent seriousness, and Jack had nearly choked at the mental image of Teal'c striking a pose in a sweet little two-piece number. That was when Daniel facetiously suggested they all wear matching one-piece bathing suits, preferably in BDU green. Before Jack knew it, Daniel was sketching several possible designs on the back of Jack's latest mission report while Carter leaned over his shoulder, offering helpful suggestions. Teal'c looked mostly amused, in that you-can-barely-see-it way of his, so Jack let them have their fun until Carter actually logged onto his computer to run an internet search for local specialty tailors.
--
Purple Beaches and Green Bikinis Teal'c, who had been pinned to the ground during the melee, rose smoothly to his feet, but did not make any other move. Despite the rips in jacket and trousers that showed hints of bloodstains, he stood calmly, facing the open head of the staff weapon sparking only six feet from his face.
Daniel swallowed hard, feeling his nerves scream against muscle memory. Gripping the weapon so hard that his fingers ached, he remembered another time when he'd aimed a staff weapon at a man he didn't truly understand yet, but had already come to consider a friend. He'd swiveled at the last moment and tried to fire on Ra, but missed. He hadn't known how to compensate for the staff's length, for the kick when it fired.
He'd gotten a lot more proficient at the staff weapon since then.
Teal'c was still standing there, unmoved and unmoving. Daniel blinked against the sweat in his eyes. It was unsettling to watch the planes of Teal'c's face shift in his perception from friend to cool stranger.
But Daniel had held this selfsame weapon once before and fired it on Teal'c's behalf, even with the potential for Sha're's redemption hanging the balance. His fingers' imperceptible twitch on the trigger shamed him.
He looked around at the intent circle watching him. "This man," he said firmly, if pitched slightly higher than usual, "is my friend." With slow deliberation, he powered the staff weapon down again and tossed it on the grass by his feet.
--
Canis Major "This is fixable," Sam promised.
"Give it a kick," Daniel suggested. "Like you'd do on Earth."
Sam was shocked. "I would never kick my Indian!"
"This thing may be vintage -- decrepit, even -- but we're not trying to restore it. We just want to get to the Gate."
Sam twisted this, poked that, and the motor shifted to a smooth hum. "There!"
She snapped the panel shut and mounted the alien motorcycle. Daniel slid pillion behind her.
"It's 200 miles to the Gate, we've got a tank of liquid naquadah, a zat, and we're wearing pat'ki leather jackets," she proclaimed. "Let's go!"
-- Happiness Redux Reviewing the recap
My favorite story this year (of my own): I think I'll go with
Pawns' Promotion for this one. My first non-canon AU story, a strong Sha're (whee!), and the fun of exploring the friendship between Sha're and Sam in very unusual circumstances.
Most fun story: I'd waver somewhere between
L is for L-Space (Discworld!) and
Your Regularly Scheduled Programming (I do love The Jack and Daniel Show), but
Purple Beaches and Green Bikinis wins in the end, just for Jack's mental visuals. :)
Hardest story to write: Probably
Canis Major. I didn't want to tip the reader to the twist too early, but I didn't want to be painfully obvious about it, either. And of course I adore the sheer complication of Teal'c and Daniel's friendship, and I wanted to do it justice.
Looking back, did you write more fic than you thought you would this year, less, or about what you'd predicted? Less than I wanted, sigh. No surprise there.
Did you take any writing risks this year? What did you learn from them? The
Speaking of SG-1 series offered me the opportunity to write about every member of the team. That's a good thing, I'd say. I'm glad I had the chance to play with everyone's voice -- even if it was only in drabble form. And I'm glad I finally dipped my toe in the grand and vast ocean of non-canon AUs.
Did you meet last year's goals? Barely! Yes, I wrote more fic, but nothing longer. That poor neglected first-ever WIP isn't even in progress -- it's just meeping quietly on my hard drive. I didn't write a single Canon vs. Fanon essay either. On the other hand, I did accomplish one thing: the
sg1friendathon. And I did lots of reccing. :)
Do you have any goals for the coming year? Finally participate in
stargate_summer (I have the most bizarre, sideways potential for accomplishing that, with over 1,000 words already written). Get that Daniel and Clark fic finished, somehow. Write more meta, write more fic, and enjoy more gen squee!
