January: fic, fandom, recs

Jan 31, 2011 23:27

It's been a relatively quiet month here in Fig Newton Land - mostly because of tomorrow, whee!

Tomorrow, of course, is SG-1 Gen Fic Day, complete with Crossover Alphabet Soup! I'm very excited about the Soup - the crossover idea certainly lends itself to different approaches! So far, five efficient authors have already e-mailed me their ficlets. It's gleeful to see the sheer variety here - all five fics focus on different eras and characters from Stargate. I can't wait to see what everyone else comes up with! (Including my own. Currently about four paras long...)

Don't forget that Gen Fic Day is open to any gen SG-1 related fanwork, not just the Soup. Connecting the Alphabet Soup to Gen Fic Day is just a shameless way to make sure that we have at least 26 new ficlets. :)

In other fandom news, gate_women's latest Women of the Gate ficathon has been live this month. I really like the way the ficathon is open for three weeks of posting, so you get the stories and artwork spread out instead of cluttering up your list all at once. It is also most convenient for people like me who have to argue with their characters about the direction of the fic!

And speaking of which...

My own contribution to Women of the Gate is Pawns' Promotion - my first ever real AU! I've dabbled with AUs before, but they've always been canon ones (or based on canon). Oddly enough, the version Sha're wanted was all angsty and had Daniel either captured or killed by Heru'ur while Teal'c and Sha're made it back to Earth and included a scene where she confronted Apophis in Serpent's Song without him realizing that Amaunet was gone, and just... yeah. Regretfully, that story is going on the back burner together with all my other sadly-neglected longer fic bunnies.

On the other hand, if you want to read about the NID trying to snatch Sam and Sha're as former hosts that are worthy of study, try Pawns' Promotion. I confess that I wrote the whole fic just so Sha're could make that little speech at the end. :)

On the more somber side, there's A Fine and Private Place, which is post-Descension Daniel and the nature of memory, with a little extra Janet angst thrown in. Mostly S7 with a bit of Ripple Effect in the end.

Good thing my upcoming Alphabet Soup ficlet is going to be a little lighter, heh.

Finally, we have my usual two categories of recs this month, posted at stargateficrec and crossposted to figs_sg1_rec. I only managed four recs per category, despite having a lot more on my to-rec list. Obviously, I'll just have to rec these again in the future! The master list hasn't been updated since October, so if you're looking for newer recs, you might want to browse the recent entries tagged as sg-1 fic recs.

Five things recs

Five Ways It ALL Ended Happily, by Tarimanveri (G)
Bigger on the Inside, by SentientCitizen (PG)
Five Missions Jack Fantasizes About, by Niamaea (PG)

::insert regular encouragement to sign up to rec here::

sg1genrecs's current theme is stranded off-world. Possibly it is a lot more difficult to find gen fics of this nature than I realized. Perhaps some of you would like to prove me wrong, and rec some! :)
