Signups for Crossover Alphabet Soup

Dec 13, 2010 12:08

Judging by last week's poll, SG-1 Gen Fic Day and Crossover Alphabet Soup has been moved from mid-January to February 1st. Hopefully, this should give everyone plenty of time to write. However, enough people asked for early signups that I'm putting up this entry now. If you can't afford to commit yourself at this point, don't worry - I will periodically post reminders to make sure all 26 slots get filled.

Since this Soup is for crossovers rather than a specific character, the rules are going to be a little different. I hope I've been clear enough, but if you have any questions, don't hesitate to ask!

First of all, you need to know what we're talking about. :) Alphabet Soup is an anthology of stories based on the letters of the alphabet. Each author claims a letter and writes a minimum of 100 words on the subject of the current Alphabet Soup. When the Soups are posted, I collate all the fics and post them as a single anthology -- abridged on LJ due to entry limits, in full on Dreamwidth. We've done ten of these in the past, all linked here. There have been 93 different authors contributing to the Soups so far, all spanning different corners of the fandom -- something that makes me really happy. :)

This time, the theme of our Alphabet Soup is crossovers. Crossovers seem to fall into three general categories: the meeting of two fandoms, either through a quantum mirror (or some other mysterious device) or both fandoms co-existing in the same universe; the fusion of two fandoms, creating an AU with elements from both; or one fandom referring to a second fandom as fictional, either as books, movies, or television shows. [Forgive my usage of some of my own fics as examples here!] This Alphabet Soup is intended for the first category only. Stories that meld two fandoms into a different creature or fics that portray characters from another fandom watching SG-1 (or vice versa) do not qualify.

With that caveat out of the way, this is how it works:

Fandoms may be claimed on a first come, first served basis. Comment and claim a fandom - one fandom per author only! Once a fandom has been claimed, another author may not write in the same fandom. I will add claimed fandoms to this entry as quickly as possible, but if you claimed a fandom first, it's yours. By making a claim, you are committing yourself to writing at least 100 words of crossover fic between SG-1 and your chosen fandom by February 1st.

At this time, I am only asking people to claim fandoms. Each fandom will eventually have to be represented by a letter of the alphabet, and if you definitely know which letter you want, you're welcome to claim it now. Once a letter has been claimed, it will not be available to anyone else. (Speaking from long experience, though, I will assure you that once your fic is written, it's relatively simple to find a word for any given letter that will suit your story well enough!) Your chosen letter does NOT have to be the name of your fandom, although it can be if you want!

Some examples: you have chosen Quantum Leap as your crossover fandom. You may choose Q (Q is for Quantum Leap) or Z (Z is for Ziggy) or D (D is for Doctorates) or anything else that suits you. Or your fandom is Farscape, and you claim F (F is for Farscape) or W (W is for Wormholes) or T (T is for Twins). Of maybe you've claimed Watership Down, and your letter is W (W is for Watership Down, or W is for Woundwort) or E (E is for El-ahrairah.)

If there anyone out there who can write a non-cracky crossover of Watership Down and SG-1, PLEASE sign up!

Once you've settled on your fandom, you have until February 1st to write your fic, at a minimum of 100 words. On that day, I will post the SG-1 Gen Fic Day entry. Comment with your fic in the SG-1 Gen Fic Day post, using the title as the subject of your comment (S is for Sanctuary, H is for Horatio Hornblower, P is for Puzzle). On February 2nd, I'll collate all the ficlets in alphabetical order and post them together as a complete anthology. You can find more detailed instructions here, with one more note that I'll add below.

There are only four rules for writing your story: your fic must be at least 100 words, although there is no maximum limit; it must be a crossover between SG-1 and your chosen fandom; the fic must be canon compliant for SG-1, although it does not have to reference canon specifically and may be set in the pre-series or future eras; and it should be gen. This is part of SG-1 Gen Fic Day, after all. :)

An author is welcome to mention, or even focus, on canon relationships from either fandom. But no romance, please, even if one of the fandoms includes an AU or alternate timeline in which your ship is canon. If in doubt, feel free to ask.

On a personal note, I must explain that my server is sometimes a little cranky. I have found myself blocked from viewing some web pages, and on others, random paragraphs are deleted. I am going to ask authors to also e-mail a copy of their story to me at sg1.fig@gmail.com to ensure that I have your fic intact for the anthology. I apologize for the necessity of this, but I'd rather be safe than sorry. You may e-mail your story to me whenever it is finished, even if it's before Gen Fic Day. I will not repost it before the complete anthology goes live (although I might sneak an early peek, heh).

Please spread the word - I'm always delighted to have new authors join us (just as I'm ecstatic when loyal regulars join us for yet another round.) And if you're a newcomer signing up, make sure to mention it so I can welcome you properly. :)
