So, despite being away for ten days of it, January turned out to be a pretty busy month. :)
In fandom
Some very exciting ficathons were announced!
We've got the
tealc_ficathon going
live in a month's time, because Teal'c is awesome and always deserves more fic love than he gets. Then
aurora_novarum went live with
jacksamfriends, which is the ficathon we've always wanted - stories about Jack and Sam friendship, which is probably the poorest stepchild in SG-1 fandom! Sign-ups are going on
right now - in fact, as soon as I finish typing this, I'm off to sign up. :)
And, of course, there's
stargate_summer. My fic has, um, been thought about a lot? ::scuffs toe:: But even if many of the participants aren't planning to write gen, there are enough to make me squee. Even if you imagine that half the signees will drop out (and I doubt that will happen), that would still leave us with over fifteen stories at 50,000 words to enjoy this summer! And that doesn't even include latecomers, who can sign up through May (hint hint).
This isn't SG-1-exclusive, but Dreamwidth Studios is very close to the initial closed beta stage. If you want to know more, there's a round-up of posts here:
Why Dreamwidth Don't forget SG-1 Gen Fic Day, going live tomorrow! I would consider it a great favor if you'd all spread the word to your flists. Send people to the
SG-1 Gen Fic Day Index for further details. Anything goes, as long as it's gen and related to SG-1.
In fic
I called for prompts again this month and got some great ones! I've only done four so far, I'm afraid, but I will get all ten team ficlets done. Um, eventually. :) I'll commit myself now to having at least one of them done for Gen Fic Day tomorrow.
Here are
the four I wrote:
Secret of Success: PG. Jack's taken captive by a Goa'uld who doesn't believe his secret for success, until it's too late. 972 words.
Sure Looks Strange: G. Probably my first fic written for the sole purpose of the punch line! :) The team tackles a monster off-world, and identification comes from a surprising source. The team should know that Teal'c pwns all by now. ~1,660 words.
General Hammond Goes to Washington: G. I will shamelessly steal
thraesja's comment, because it's a better summary than my own: Jack's losing his marbles, Hammond's losing his job and the team is losing their leader. Of course it can all be solved with a road trip! 800 words.
The Twilight Zone G. "Twilight isn't proof of a fracture in the space-time continuum? Are you sure?" ~735 words. Y'know, my sole exposure to Twilight comes via posts made on my flist, but I have to say the reaction I've gotten has proved highly entertaining. :)
Announcing: Sam and Daniel friendship at
stargateficrec is official!
I am delighted to report that the combined enthusiasm of my fellow Sam and Daniel friendship lovers has paid off:
Sam and Daniel friendship is
getting its own category! The official new sign-up entry will go up for March. Yay Sam and Daniel, and all gen fic! :D
If you're interested in signing up now... well, there's always the
general friendship sign-up entry. Or any other
category you'd like to rec. Why not spread some fic love and share some stories that you think are worth reading?
For my part, I recced two categories in January: Daniel and Cameron friendship, and Janet Frasier. The former was a response to a direct request from
angelsgracie, who runs
stargateficrec; sadly, it took me at least six months to come up with enough stories for a month's worth of recs! The latter was a form of nostalgia; love for the Little Doc aside, Janet was one of my first rec categories way back in 2006, and it was a pleasure to rec her again.
Links are to the rec archive at
figs_sg1_rec, where everything is sorted
by tags. The master list of fic recs, sorted by alphabetical order, is updated through the end of December:
A-M and
N-Z.
Daniel and Cameron friendship recs:
Mission Omission, by Signe (G) Fitting In, by Ayiana (PG) Here Was Neither Peace..., by Kellifer (PG) Watching Long in Hope and Fear, by Vain glorious
(PG) Determination, by Cleo the Muse (PG) Janet Frasier recs:
The Sea with its Deepness, by Pellucid (PG) To Forget, by Red painted girl (PG) Infirmary Notes, by Aurora Novarum (PG) Lunchrooms are Alike All Over, by Geonn Cannon (G) I Like the Quiet, by Wonderland (PG) I wasn't doing monthly round-ups back when I recced Janet the first time, so here are the recs from 2006:
Doctor's Orders, by Wonderland (PG) Waiting for Him, by Kellifer (PG) Assess This, by Betacandy (PG) Losses, by Jb (PG) Cleanliness is Next to Godliness, by Kaz (PG) For more Janet fics, you can try the
Janet tag at

And belated happy birthdays to
sg_betty, who takes my gen squee and multiplies it tenfold, and
supplyship, who spreads her SG-1 love across the whole fandom spectrum! Hope it was a great one for you both. :)
