The moment when his life went out, like a spark of light swallowed up by the darkness, Willow felt it in her heart. Her hand went to the pendant around her neck, one of two that she wore to keep what little tabs she could on the two Watchers that had volunteered for a mission unlike anything she could have ever dreamed about. It was an assignment so far away that they didn’t know if they would ever hear from either of them again. All she’d been able to do was make it so that she, and therefore the Council, would know if they died.

They had gone to observe, to record, to make note of anything out there in the new galaxy that might fall into the category of things that the Council would need to handle.

Willow clutched at the pendant, tears in her eyes. No one had heard from either of them since they left. All she and the rest of the Council had to go on were the pendants that showed that they were both still alive. It was something, even if not much.

And now… now they didn’t even have that.

She looked down at the pendant that she clutched, the once warm, white stone now dark and cold. Lifeless. Her finger rubbed over the initials that had been carved into it, by the hand of the Watcher himself, before he left. A ritual, a rite. The blessing of the Goddess upon them both on that last day of his leave before he had to report to base to finish getting ready. Expedition. Time to pack and get going. To a galaxy far, far away.

Her eyes wandered over the initials, telling her which of the two had lost his life, and she swallowed thickly around the grief. He’d been so nice. So sweet. One of only five Watchers that she had personally trained, right there at the beginning, when they were still trying to create structure out of chaos. For him it had been a family business, even though he had gone into another field entirely. His father had been one of the Watchers that had died when the Council was destroyed. Joining them then, helping to create a new Council, had been something he felt like he had to do.

Wiping the tears from her cheeks, Willow left her bedroom in search of Giles. The halls of the European Council house were quiet, almost empty. There were few slayers over here. Most of them were still needed in the States. Kennedy was over there right now, too, helping train the newest group, and Willow wished that her girlfriend were with her, to hold her while she absorbed and dealt with this latest blow.

Goddess. When would they stop losing people? He’d barely been a watcher for two years, and now he was gone.

She saw Giles and stopped, knowing he could tell by the look on her face.

“Peter Grodin is dead.”
