TimeGate is a Doctor Who (and more) convention in Atlanta, GA, USA, that takes place each year over the Memorial Day weekend.
This year it's being held May 22-24 at the Holiday Inn Select Atlanta-Perimeter / Dunwoody in Atlanta (close to the Perimeter Mall area), and very close to a MARTA station (for those of you who will be flying in and need to take public transportation to the con hotel; of course the hotel runs shuttles to the station).
The Doctor Who guests this year are Mary Tamm, who played the first Romana during the "Key to Time" series, and Terrance Dicks, who could in many ways be said to be the man who knows everything about Doctor Who!
This is a rare North American convention appearance for Mary. She will be autographing, posing for photographs, appearing on Q and A panels, and also doing a live commentary on "The Stones of Blood".
Terrance Dicks has written many scripts for the show, served as Script Editor, and wrote many of the Target novelization for the Classic series. He's also written novels for the New series as well. And this is just the tip of the iceberg of his long career in and out of the BBC programming.
TimeGate is also a Stargate convention as well. The SG guest this year is Brad Greenquist. In 2004, Brad played the part of Dr. Keffler in the Stargate SG-1 episode "Resurrection", about a girl who is committing murders that she has no recollection of. Not only is this a very highly regarded episode of SG-1, due in large part to Brad's performance as the morally ambiguous Keffler, it's significant for two other reasons: it marked Amanda Tapping's directoral debut and was the first script written for the show by Michael Shanks.
And if you're bringing a partner or friend who's not into Doctor Who or Stargate, don't worry! Besides the Doctor Who programming track, and the Stargate programming track, the con has another track of programming that appeals to everyone, with panels on topics as diverse as steampunk, fantasy lit, Star Trek, paranormal romance lit, and Sherlock Holmes, among many other panels. There's also gaming, and of course a Video room that plays Doctor Who, Torchwood, the Sarah Jane Adventures, and much more. A costume non-contest will be held, and also a cabaret, with the proceeds from (last year it was just $5 to attend) going to a local charity. And there's many other events, from musical acts, to radio theatre to a live chess match and more!
There's also fantasy lit programming! Jana Olivers and Gllian Summers, fantasy authors, will be attending, reading, doing panels, and signings. There's panels on fantasy, steampunk, paranormal romances, and young adult lit. :)
I did mention the steampunk panel, right?
And a Sherlock Holmes expert as well? Louis is local, but once worked for the BBC. This year he's talking about why Hounds can't be filmed right.
The website is here:
http://www.timegatecon.org/ Memberships are just $40.00 at the door, for all three days, but there will one-day and two-day memberships.
Hotel rooms are still available at the con price of $84/night. This price is good through Monday, Memorial Day, as there will be programming well into the evening on Sunday, and many people like to use Monday as a rest and travel day. If you have problems booking through the link to the Holiday Inn web site, please just call the hotel directly and say that you are with TimeGate to get the discount.
I hope that you will attend Timegate! It's a lovely con with great access to the guests, great folk to talk with, many events besides the panels, and lots of Southern hospitality. :)
