Alternates: Round 1 // Challenge 4

Did you create a few icons for the challenge and then choose the best one to submit? If so, this is where you can post those "rejected" icons (along with your submitted entry) and make them sharable to others.

Really like the cropping and texture in the fourth alternate. :)

Thanks! :) I worked forever on that one and had some interesting texture work going, almost all of which was covered up by the big black thing because I thought the icon really needed to focus on his face and his bound hands.

LOVE that Vala one!

Really? I struggled and struggled with that one. The text completely and utterly defeated me. I so very much wanted to reference everyone standing around, watching her be burned to death, but I could *not* find the right combination of font, size, and color for love or money.

Oooh, I too love the fourth alternate. I couldn't figure out what to do with that cap but what you did definitely works.

I couldn't figure out what to do with ANY of the caps. I struggled endlessly with all of those. I liked the 4th as well, though it kept going grainy due to the numerous textures I used. *rolls eyes* I was really afraid I'd be thrown out for "over sharpening" so I went with a "safe" one because I want to play in at least a few more challenges. We're finally getting to some really excellent caps.

(Not that I don't like the ones we've had but now we're getting to the ones that make one work those creative muscles and reach down to the bottom of one's tricks bag.)

Yeah, some details are lost in his face in the fourth but I'm too busy being pleased by the colors and the black space around him to notice. XD

And all the challenges thus far have been causing me to "???" about what to do, which I think is because I'm not very familiar with SG1 and usually can't call on anything outside the picture to tell me about what's going on. It's surprisingly difficult to icon caps when you have no idea of the context!

so I went with a "safe" one because I want to play in at least a few more challenges

Okay, you know there's that whole long excellent answer you gave me when I asked about special challenge requirements, and I haven't gotten back to you yet... but THIS. This is why I feel special requirements are needed in lims. I've been participating in regular icontests for the past several weeks as well and I am so much more creative in them because I'm not afraid of getting thrown out, whereas with lims if I'm stumped I tend to go the "safer" route -- at least for the moment, so I don't feel like I'm getting challenged as much as I could be.

I think the middle one is a bit too bright, but the last is excellent. Especialy the contrast, and this slightly blured background.

I knew it would be too bright for competition. :) I adore color and I tend to go too far in the "OMG, that's popping off the screen and hurting my eyeballs" direction.

I would have entered the Vala icon if I had ever nailed the text. I still can't find the right combination of font and sizing to make it as I want it. I really liked that one except for my inability to do text well. I can hardly wait until I figure out how to do text. *sigh*

I like your entered icon. The texture works nicely to focus attention on Daniel, and I don't know if the dark lines just at the top are part of the background? or a texture? but they read like text made from a script-like font that's very interesting. (Er, I like text that's illegible that blends into the background.)

Thank you. :) I knew it was "safe" in that it wasn't great but it was mostly inoffensive. I wanted to make it through this challenge because I've been looking forward to some of the upcoming caps. That's a terrible attitude since I *should* be trying to make the best icon every time but this week I lacked creativity and the caps were tough for me.

The dark lines at the top are a texture but I chose it because it was ambiguous about whether it was texture or text. I liked how it echoed the unknown future facing Daniel in the cap. Not that I expect other people to see that because that's way obscure. :)

(BTW, I've stolen your entry and added it my icon collection. I hope that's okay because I'm not willing to give it back. I *adore* it!)

The caps for this challenge were hard, and I'm looking at the set for the upcoming challenge thinking they're even harder (so evil! *g*), and eeping to myself. :P

And, steal at will! :)

They turned out to be harder than I expected. And yes, I've been struggling with this week's caps, too. I've already entered but I'm considering using a skip because I just haven't got anything that lights my fire and I'm leaving town tomorrow so tonight is all I have left to work on it. And I'm hosting a family dinner tonight and finishing packing, so... :|

Next week's are even harder -- or, so I think. Landscapes are incredibly difficult for me. Just finding a crop is nigh on impossible and then the coloring and texture options are nearly infinite compared to creating a person icon. I refuse to skip that one, though, as the whole point is the challenge.

I keep promising myself I'm going to grab icons from other participants, too, because I don't want to seem to be favoring anyone but then you keep making these icons that I simply MUST have. *g*
