1. When John goes. It's a fleeting thought, more than anything else; Cam's busy getting certified in the F-302s at the time, and when John mentions he's got a new posting, somewhere incredibly classified, Cam gives him a look that he hopes conveys to John everything he wants it to convey and kisses him on the temple. They don't say goodbye; they never do. It's later, after John's packed his single duffel and left, that Cam wishes he could just go along with him.
2. A few months later, when he's recuperating in a hospital so classified he isn't sure which it is, with SG-1 coming to visit in fits and gasps. O'Neill offers him any posting he wants, and he's so tempted to open his mouth and say find Major Sheppard, I just want John, but he's not quite drugged enough to let it come out.
3. When they reestablish contact with Atlantis, Cam's just getting his bearings at the SGC. He wants to go, though, wants to hop on the Daedalus and make that trip and arrive in time to save the day; better yet, he wants to tag along with Everett and his Marines, and he knows it must be love if he's willing to subject himself to that. He's close to asking for it, even; he stops himself, somehow, and later isn't quite sure why.
4. When Atlantis leaves the San Fransisco Bay and heads back to Pegasus. It's been great, better than great, having John just a few hundred miles away rather than thousands of light-years. He doesn't realise how great it's been, having his partner around for a year, until he's suddenly not there, until it's back to carefully worded emails every two weeks in the databurst. It's the first time that Cam hates the fact that John has Atlantis, because it's something that John loves. It's different than how he loves Cam, but it's no less powerful for it. Cam hates to be jealous of a City, but there you have it.

He doesn't, not yet, but he fills out the paperwork quietly and has it on hand at all times. He'll wait until it's official, until everything is squared away, but that's all. He's not waiting any longer than that.

Aww! It's the hardest thing about shipping these two, knowing that they each love their job and that the only way they can keep those jobs is to go on living in separate galaxies. I love stories that find a way for them to be together.
