Five Letters Jack Wrote But Never Sent - And One He DidemgeetrekDecember 7 2009, 21:29:15 UTC
1) Dear Sara,
Even though you don't blame me (or so you say. How can that be?), I'll never forgive myself.
I know you don't want me to go on this mission, but it's my duty. And anyway, it's probably for the best.
I'm sorry. For everything.
- J.
2) Carter--
I know I said I cared more than I should, but it's not what you think. We're all in each other's hip pockets. We ALL care more than we should. It doesn't mean anything.
Well, it means something. It means a lot. Just not what you think.
I'm not who you think. Really. I'm not. So don't hang your hopes on me. Trust me on this, and move on.
Move on, Carter. I'm not the one.
- O'Neill
3) Daniel--
You called me a "stupid son of a bitch." That hurt. A lot.
Oh, I know I'm stupid, sometimes, and a son of a bitch too. What hurt me wasn't the words. It was the anger, the RAGE, behind them.
I'll take that pain, though. It's a lot less than the pain I'd feel if you died.
If the price of keeping you safe is your hatred of me, I'll pay that price and never count the cost.
- Jack
4) Dear Mini-Me,
Since you ARE me, you know how much it's making me crazy that you're out there, getting a second chance to make a first impression.
I wish you didn't exist. But since you do, I guess I owe you something. Something, but NOT what I have. Keep your paws off what's mine. I don't share.
Can't imagine how you'll stand it in that school, sitting where Charlie should be. So when it gets to be too much, let me know, and I'll help you work out something else. Hopefully, something that'll take you a long way from this place, from my life, from Daniel. Something like herding yaks in Tibet.
And then, once you're gone, I never want to see or hear from you again.
No offense.
- Me
5) Dear Daniel,
If you're reading this, it's because I'm dead.
Sorry about that.
I've left you everything. The house, the cabin, the truck. Bank accounts, stocks and bonds. You're the named beneficiary of my military life insurance.
All the information you'll need is on the attached pages. My lawyer has a copy of my will.
For a long time, I wondered what you might have wanted. I knew what I wanted, knew it was impossible. This is the only way I know to make you understand. It's not enough, it can never be enough. It'll have to be.
- Jack
6) Dear Daniel,
I've been keeping a little list of goals, and I thought you'd like a status report.
Item One. Defeat Goa'uld. Check.
Item Two. Defeat Ori. Check.
Item Three. Retire. Check. Effective 12:01 AM today.
Item Four. Ask Daniel. I think I know the answer, but I want to be sure.
Item Five. Live happily ever after. Pending resolution of Item Four, above.

#1 made me shudder for suicidal!Jack, and #3 made me shiver for what's coming soon. I think #4 is Perfect Jack!voice, and the part about Charlie... I'm like, how could he say something like that? Put something like that into the clone's head? But of course he's talking to himself, and the thought is already there. *shivers again*
I adore #6, and I'm so glad you expanded the original prompt to include it. :-)

Five things prompts don't usually make me want to start writing RIGHT NOW, but this one grabbed on and wouldn't let go until it was all on the page. I can see Jack writing letters, quickly, efficiently--and then just as efficiently (#1-#4) burning them in the fireplace. #5 wasn't burned, just never needed. Glad you liked--especially #6. Had to have a happy ending!
