- Right after the box of tissues came through the gate. Who knew you could miss real tissues as much as double soy lattes and indoor plumbing? Somehow he didn't think the Colonel would have appriciated the sentiment.
- When the crystal entity pretended to be Charlie. Jack looked as lost and broken as the day Daniel had first met him, and Daniel just wanted him to know that people cared about him. Purely platonically, of course. But, well, 'I love you in a purely platonic way' didn't seem to hold the level of comfort he was going for, so he offered silent support instead.
- At Sha're's funeral. It was Jack's turn to offer silent support then, but Daniel really could have used the verbal reassurance and considered saying it first just to hear it back. But he didn't want to say it and not hear it back. Or, worse, have Jack say it out of obligation, so he stayed quiet.
- When he was choosing between Oma and Ascension and Jack and almost-certain death. He wanted to say, "Jack, I love you, ask me to stay." The terms platonic and sexually no longer were adequate to describe how he felt about Jack. Asking Jack to choose between watching Daniel die and watching Daniel leave forever would have been a hell of a thing to do to someone you love though, so Daniel tried to say it without words and made the choice for himself.
- When the Ancient repository of knowledge was slowly taking away who Jack was; he nearly said it then. But he put it off too late and refused to say it when Jack couldn't possibly understand. He vowed to say it when Jack was whole and himself again - the very minute they were alone.
Lovely. And I kind of suspect he didn't, but kept on going like that (wanting to say it but not saying) for years or forever ... but I hope he did say it. :-)
