5 Earth customs Vala can't understandbluflamingoMay 24 2009, 19:00:52 UTC
1. Independence Day. She likes the fireworks, and the team barbeques are fun, but what’s the point of celebrating independence from another landmass on the same planet? Eventually, they’ll face something too big coming at them, and no-one’s going to care who’s independent then

1. Birthday candles. They always melt down into the icing, every damn time, and she’s had to eat wax before and those are memories she’d really rather forget.
2. Birthdays in general. Nowhere else (at least, that she’s stayed at for any length of time) does anyone even bother to keep track, beyond the equivalent of “Oh, she was born just after harvest”. Granted, any excuse for cake is a good one, but it seems odd to celebrate someone for simply showing up.
3. Shaking hands. She understands the power of symbols, of saying See, I’m unarmed, but she’s seen too many people killed because they trusted too much, stepped too close, forgot how easy it is to smile and hide a knife behind your back
( ... )
Thanks! I must confess, Vala's views on golf are pretty much my own. But they seemed to fit her well enough, so I don't feel guilty for using her as a mouthpiece, just this once.
