Five ways Daniel and Vala Ended up Together - part 3randomfreshinkSeptember 30 2008, 04:26:39 UTC
Spoilers S10 (Unending) and Ark of the Truth
Because of the Stargate Program
The plan is to go public--trot out the non-threatening aliens (not Teal'c), show off the peaceful scientists (Daniel's been given a script to follow), and honor the country's most decorated officers (Mitchell is pulling every string he has to get out of that one, but Sam's already dragged him in so he can be the dog to her pony in that show). Sitting in Daniel's office, Vala has six pages of itinerary, and that's only for the first month of her tour. Daniel is going over his schedule, and chokes when he reads he's presenting at the World Archaeological Congress. No one is going to want to hear the evidence he has to present, not when it tears apart everything taught for the past fifty years. And he wonders if this is how Galileo felt when he was invited have a nice chat with the Church about things--that didn't go so well, either.
Vala's stretched across his desk, laying on it more than leaning and she looks up and asks, "What if they find out I was the Orisci's mother?"
"You mean they find out we both more or less invited the bad guys over and put Earth in danger?"
She nods, and Daniel has no answer. Vala does. She takes another look at the papers, throws them over her shoulder, then leans back across Daniel's desk again. "Daniel, I know this world. Nice little world. Nice people. Dry climate. Lots and lots of ruins. Not the brightest spot in the galaxy, but oh, did I mention the ruins? Fascinating scribbles on them--nothing I've ever seen before. We could be there tomorrow. Might even be treasure." Her voice rises with optimism, but Daniel glances at the pages in his hand. "Vala, we have a responsibility."
She flicks a finger at his pages. "Daniel, we have an obligation to use the talents we've been given. Are you telling me this is the best use of your skills?" Still frowning he looks at his pages, then at hers, scattered on his floor now. With this schedule, he won't see his friends again for years. He won't see his work for years. If Sam and Mitchell are about to become the dog and pony in this circus, he's pretty sure he's going to become the performing monkey.
"It's got a Stargate?" Daniel asks. Vala nods. "Did I mention the ruins? And the writing?"
Two days later, Landry has to explain to the IOA how the Stargate opened without authorization, why Dr. Daniel Jackson is missing along with Vala Mal Doran, and why Teal'c was found sitting in the control room, unconscious guards at his feet. Teal'c swears he was overpowered. The dialing computer is missing the last five recorded outgoing connections. General Jack O'Neill is amused by all of it. And he's going to hit Sam up as soon as he can for her backdoor backup records, because no way is he leaving these two on their own to get into even more trouble.

Great set of stories! Love the variety of ways you concocted to get them alone together for long enough to develop more of a relationship, and love the honeymoon 'suite'. The last one's my favorite, probably because I feel so much sympathy for Daniel in that situation, and it seems so appropriate for Vala to offer him an alternative out of her own knowledge of the galaxy and her own adventurous spirit, and in that one they really choose their own fate. Plus, yay for Jack at the end. Thanks for doing these!

Some favorite lines:
Two other Daniel treasure hunts have given everyone on Atlantis a deep respect for Daniel, and the certainty that the man is a bigger danger than the Wraith ever were.
*shakes head sadly* It's so true!
He takes Vala with him--and he really doesn't give a damn who sees them leave holding hands.
Awwww! And Vala hopes everybody sees. :-)
And the pulse is beating slow in Teal'c's jaw.
Danger, Will Robinson!!
And he wonders if this is how Galileo felt when he was invited have a nice chat with the Church about things--that didn't go so well, either.
I'm not sure Galileo would have been much better off on the run with Vala, but Daniel has a better shot. ;-D

And I do think that's why Unending worked for these two -- they need time enough to break down the defenses and realize the attraction and the fit.

Vala...flaunt? Only every chance she gets.
And, yes, with Vala you know there's not going to be anything like any kind of house arrest.
