Spoilers for S10 (Unending) and Ark of the Truth

Daniel hears about the plans to use the Ark of Truth through back channels. It takes him an hour to come up with a plan, and then another two hours to talk his team into helping. Sam is certain no one at Area 51 has figured out how to reprogram the ark. Mitchell backs her up. But Teal'c listens and nods and tells of the weapons stash he has hidden on top of the mountain. At that Sam and Mitchell swap a glance, but there're in, and Daniel doesn't ask Teal'c if he was planning for an invasion, or something else. They use Sodan shields, and Vala has a cloaked cargo ship waiting to ring them out. But of course it goes bad the way plans do. Sam and Mitchell are caught on the ground; Teal'c gets them out of the warehouse and then those three are on the run. Daniel and Vala have to leave orbit before 302 fighters are on their tail. They're all supposed to meet up on Chulak, which is still rebuilding from the Ori. Daniel gives them two weeks, Vala wants to wait a month. But an SG team comes through and that starts them moving. Three years later, they've learned the others got off-world, but they haven't managed to find them. The ark is tucked away within Morgan's hidden gate network. But it's when Vala winds herself around him, sharing warmth the way they now share everything, that Daniel realizes he's reasonably happy. They visit only dead worlds, he has all the time he wants for exploration and Vala's a better research assistant than thief. The trade in rare artifacts keeps them almost comfortable. And when curls up like this, breathes soft on the skin just behind his ear and tells him all the lies he wants to hear--that they will meet up with the others, that they'll find a place to settle, that the next world is even prettier--well, he's always been able to live on hope and not much more.
Because of Atlantis...
It's Daniel's fourth time back, and Vala's second time, and she's only come along because there's no one on Atlantis who wants to be around with Daniel when he's following up yet another hunch. This one is that there's a hidden power source. Two other Daniel treasure hunts have given everyone on Atlantis a deep respect for Daniel, and the certainty that the man is a bigger danger than the Wraith ever were. They don't find the power source, but they do find access into a tower that hasn't been explored. It takes them three days to realize they're cut off from the rest of the outpost. Daniel shrugs when he hears the news--nothing's tried to shoot them, shock them or stun them, the views are spectacular, there's something that generates food. It takes him another couple of days to discover this is the equivalent of a honeymoon suite--and a little more. They come out a week after that, chemically bonded, unable to be away from each other for more than thirty hours, and unwilling to part for even that long. Of course they still argue over everything, but they now each have numerous ways to make the other one shut up. And the tower on Atlantis is put off limits to everyone.

The experiment wasn't supposed to put them out of phase. By the second day, they're ready to kill each other, by the second week they've stopped talking. By the end of a month, Sam isn't fit company for anyone, and Vala's so miserable that she disappears. It takes Daniel four hours to find where she's sulking in one of the storerooms, and he walks in prepared to give a lecture. But one look at her face, pale and streaked, stops him. Instead, he sits down and wraps her in a hug and refuses to let go. They can touch each other and that's all they can touch, and after two more weeks, Vala's gotten used to leaning on Daniel and laying on him. And Daniel's learned the habit of touching. At the end of almost twelve weeks, Sam figures how to reverse the effect. It takes them another twelve hours to get medical clearance, and then Daniel gets himself off the base and home. He takes Vala with him--and he really doesn't give a damn who sees them leave holding hands.
