1. Speedy the turtle. He used to lay on his tummy and watch Speedy amble leisurely across the floor when he was just a toddler. His father, who was a bit of a joker, had given the turtle its name, but Jack was too small to really appreciate the humor.
2. Frisky the cat, who laid in the sunshine all day long in a coma-like state. His Dad had named her, too, and Jack got the giggles whenever he introduced her to his friends.
3. Gretchen, his German Shepherd. It was the first pet that his parents allowed him to have - the first pet in the family which was actually, truly, completely his. He adored her, and she adored him. He has loved on sight every dog he has met since. Dogs are the best.
4. Charlie the hamster. It was his son's first pet, and he chose the name himself. Sara tried to gently steer him towards a different name, but it was no use. Charlie the hamster it was. For the three years that Charlie (the hamster) was a member of the O'Neill household, Charlie (the boy) had tiny toothmarks in the collar of every shirt he possessed. Sara complained constantly, but even she shed a tear or two when the little rodent passed on to his reward.
5. Daniel's fish. Jack took them after Daniel ascended, and he did his best to keep them alive. But, one by one, they died, and Jack felt that he had let Daniel down somehow. A while after Daniel returned, Jack confessed his shortcomings in the fish-sitting department. And Daniel confessed in turn that he could never keep the damn things alive for very long, either. He had always been buying one or two new ones every few weeks. Jack's sense of relief was out of all proportion, but then his emotions had been running pretty high recently. He needed to figure out why that was, but in the meantime, he had a trip to the pet store to make.

I always thought that the team took some of Daniel's things just to keep him close.
