This is for fanatics only. They just released all the Fleischer Popeye cartoons on DVD! Beautifully restored from the original negatives!! Plus a bunch of other early sound and silent Fleischer cartoons, including some of the Out of the Inkwell series ( Read more... )

The release of the Fleischer's Popeye is a great new!
I am a big fan of Out of the Winkel and Popeye's series: they ever have been my favourite cartoons of the silent era ( among Felix the Cat ones. For Krazy Kat I prefer, by far, the original comics from which I am the fan number one... or two: I don't want start a quarrel now I only have just a hand; wait until its recovery and then we can talk about it again :D)
And the colour Popeye's ones from the thirties? Those movies are just brilliant and I love the inventiveness they have both in gags and animation; not to mention the way they shot those awesome travelings, building models in the same studio! I remember to be thinking a lot about how they shooted those scenes when I was a child and it was impossible to get information about it.
I ever have been a fan of all it and feel sad that Fleischer Studios movies are so forgotten. I think there are a lot of fun in those shorts that can amaze even the new audiences (and as you, I think the Gulliver movie is a bit weird but I remember to like the long feature about the bugs)
I am happy to read you enjoyed so the Simpsons movie. None of the comments I heard or read about it say is a bad movie but even very good but nearly all them regret a bit just about the difficulty to catch the point of the rhythm the original episodes of the TV series has with their 20 or so minutes.
Have fun with those DVDs when you get them! :)

Aw, thanks for commenting. :D

Haha, I can't remember if I told you I love Krazy Kat too? I haven't seen any of the cartoons, but I have a book of KK that I've treasured since I was a kid. Found it at a garage sale for 5 cents. (I seem to have been a lucky kid in some ways.)

I haven't seen the bug feature, I'm going to have to look for that one. Maybe they will reissue that too.

I just read a biography of Max Fleischer written by his son, and it was very illuminating. I knew Max had invented the Rotoscope and quite a lot of other things (and he, or maybe Dave, had excellent taste in music if you can judge by Betty Boop) - but this book expanded my knowledge a lot. Now I have to hate Paramount as much for pulling the carpet out from under Fleischer Studios as I already hate MGM for shafting Buster! Pretty soon there won't be any Hollywood studios I can love. As yet I only despise RKO a little, and I'm hoping to forgive Warner Brothers their sins because I like Loony Tunes. XD

I think the Simpsons movie did quite a good job of being an extra-long episode, without getting too ambitious to be something completely different. I'm not about to analyze it to death - I'm just grateful I could enjoy it. I'm sure the DVDs will be fun too, lots of extras. :)
