“Well, forgive me if I don’t jump on this Beltway swoon over Paul Ryan, who’s sort of warming over Heritage Foundation ideas from when I was in junior high school and presenting them as new and bold. But no, the cause that we’re talking about here has nothing to do with the budget. If this were really about balancing the budget, they’d be tackling defense spending, they’d be tackling the real meat of the budget. They’re into 12% of the budget where they’re going after the old, the sick and the poor. That doesn’t take a whole lot of political courage. There are no lobbyists on Capitol Hill for the old, the sick and the poor. And Paul Ryan’s idea of getting rid of Medicare and replacing it with vouchers, well that’s not new either. But it’s also not popular with the American people. Poll after poll shows Americans don’t want to slash Social Security, they don’t want to throw the disabled into the street and cut their Medicaid programs. The American people have never polled positively on the things the Republicans want to do. But they don’t care about the opinion polls. They don’t like NPR, they don’t like the arts being funded, they don’t like the fact that women have a choice to whether or not they’re going to have a child. And they’re going to try to use this budget quote unquote to push their ideology. That’s not really politically courageous.”
