Just got finished reading an article on-line about giving kids medicine to bring down fevers. Actually, the article was over not giving children medicine to bring down fevers. It went over how parents give their kids too much medicine over a little problem and that high fevers were a good thing because it was helping their kids fight off infection, and that the reason parents give their kids medicine was because of the myth that high fevers cause seizures and brain damage. WTF! High fevers do cause seizures and brain damage. Granted, you need to be around 105 F for a little while for this to happen, but it is a possiblity with a fever. These things aren't things you should mess around with, fevers should be taken seriously, especially in young children. The article said not to worry if a child's fever is under 103, don't worry about giving them medicine to bring the fever down, and don't wake them if they are sleeping. WTF! If the fever is close to 103, what's to keep it from going up further if you don't try to bring it down somehow. And not waking them up to check on them? If you kid is sick, you should check to see how responsive they are a few times a night. Granted, they need sleep, but you also want to make sure their condition hasn't worsened during the course of the night.
I'm a bit worried when stuff like this is published, because there are people out there without enough education when it comes to medicine who might take this stuff to heart, and they could be doing more damage to their child, not less. Yes, if the fever is a low one, giving medicine may be a little extreame, but at the same time, not treating a high fever is just stupid.
