The Woman Who Rides Like a Man was one of the first books that I can think back and actually name that was fantasy, plain and simple. Pierce has written a lot more, but I never read more than the Alanna books, of which this is the third. Good stuff. You should read all four - they're fast enough, as YA, that it shouldn't take long.
I agree that the entire Alanna series is worth reading. The books are:
Alanna: The Beginning In the Hands of the Goddess The Woman Who Rides Like a Man Lioness Rampant
Pierce has also written several other series in this world (in which Alanna makes cameos), but I've only read one of them, the Trickster books, which were also good. A strange experience though, because I read the Alanna series when I was a kid, and the Trickster books a year or two ago, and the age difference of the characters between the two series was almost the same as MY age difference between the two series.
