I am not familiar with the nastiness either of those commutes during rush hour, but I was wondering why not take the San Mateo Bridge to South San Francisco?

I think you'll hit traffic either way. I am facing a similar issue with the reverse commute (Peninsula to East Bay).

I'd take the San Mateo Bridge to Belmont and the Bay Bridge to South SF.

Because 101 North from 92 to past the airport is not really all that fast in the mornings. In fact, it's raaaather trafficky.

It's It is the truly horrible thing about that commute ;)
Imagine - it's 8 am. You've rushed out without breakfast. You're stuck in traffic or waiting for BART at Millbrae. The nearest food is an hour's commute away. And the dreamy, smooth, overpowering smell of chocolate is everywhere, driving you mad! mad!
