”This is Phillip,” Walt says, pushing a small plastic shark into Brad’s hands eagerly. It’s quickly followed by another larger one - one that Brad actually recognizes, instead of the small battalion spread across the living room floor. “And this is Finn.”
Brad wants to ask what he’s supposed to do with Phillip and Finn, but Walt has already crawled back to the sharks and is arranging them carefully across the dark blue rug. He sits back on his heels and watches Walt fondly, putting the two sharks down in front of him carefully. “Did the evil Doctor Octopus kidnap Princess Peach again?”
Walt pauses in his careful arranging of the troops - with more thought than he used to, which makes Brad smile proudly. He looks at Brad curiously and shakes his head. “Princess Peach is a ninja shark princess now, she doesn’t need rescued.”
”Right,” Brad says, biting the inside of his cheek to keep from smiling. Sure enough, the pink shark is sitting amongst the ranks of sharks fighting against the Octopus plush. “So what is the objective then?”
This time, Brad doesn’t fight back his smile when Walt’s face suddenly goes serious. He crawls back over to Brad’s side and sits down by his side heavily, the original Mr. Shark clutched in his grasp tightly. He leans in close and whispers conspiringly, “Doctor Octopus and his army want to take over Sharktopia. We have to stop them.”
It explains why the coffee table has been pushed aside and stacked with boxes and cans, Brad thinks, and he nods his head in understanding. He turns his attention to Doctor Octopus and his army of mismatched animals - tigers and a Pikachu plush and little green army men - and asks, “Okay, what’s the plan?”
Walt’s face lights up like a beacon, crawling closer into Brad’s space to whisper in his ear excitedly. He’s warm at Brad’s side, practically vibrating out of his skin in the rush to tell Brad the plan to defend Sharktopia from Doctor Octopus, and Brad never realized how much he missed playing Sharks with Walt.
”Copy?” Walt asks, picking Phillip and Finn up to put them back in Brad’s hands.
Brad takes the sharks carefully, and nods. “Copy that.” He watches Walt’s expression turn serious instantly, crawling towards the battalion of sharks he laid out for them to play with, and he can’t help but smile.
